It's very exciting listening to new wire material; Here was a band i thought i had missed out on due to my age. I'm experiencing new wire as it happens, woo! this must be the angriest wire recording yet...colin has never sounded so pissed off and sinister. my favorites are in the art of stopping, agfers of kodack, and germ ship. i might be alone on this, but i think there is something really witty / funny about the lyrics of "..stopping" (which consist of basically, one line). I imagine a person going up to someone else they don't know at a party and saying "trust me, believe me, it's all in the art of stoppping" and then leaving without saying anything else. right, i'm not crazy. i hope we get more miniature numbers like "germ ship" in the future. wire are masters of the less-then-2-minute incredible song... and "agfers of kodack" is my favorite...soon to be a wire classic i would say. graham's vocal line is truly demented and twisted - i've never heard him sound like that before - and those guitar really do CRUNCH. the only criticism i would have is that wire sound very "colin/swim-esque" which is natural due to colin producing and the group recording at swim studio (i believe this is so, i dont have the cd in front of me at the moment). But I think the integration of colin/swim+graham/spoken word+bruce/noise would be even more intriguing.... also, anyone think the drum fill intro to agfers of kodack sounds exactly (in timbre) like the one in colin's tsunami? i just always think of that when i hear it... ~michael ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 21:39:47 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: [idealcopy] Factory poll/top 10 wire LP's.... > with all the press that Factory Records has been getting because of the 24 > Hour Party People film, i have been curious...what are the Ideal Copyists top > ten Factory albums in order...and what are your top five Factory bands in > order.... > Robert Lynn just to remind anyone still thinking of voting for top 10 wire albums there's just a few days left...(30/4) keith ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 22:04:22 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: a play for today > >>spiritualised > *i just saw them live the other night. very professional. not many songs from the new album (thank goodness) but they did play "broken heart", "medication", "walking with jesus" and an awesome 10 minute version of "take me to the other side"... i like the last album you know. i think it's really under-rated. > >elbow - asleep at the back single > *i think it actually sounds a bit morrissey-ish in the chorus..i actually liked the singles from the album you didnt like ("red", "newborn") the best... i didn't say i didn't like them! > > >>the latest pulp single which features the nick cave version of 'disco 2000'. > *i think it's rather good myself, and the "video" mix of bad cover version is rather funny i think (especially that guy imitating tom jones) yeah. it's really good. for those you haven't heard it, it's a sort of band aid piss-take where where a load of different people get their one line c/o impersonators... > *funny thing, i went to see super furry animals, and they were playing this track as I walked in. so, seeing how no DJ ever plays the fall here, I went up to talk to the DJ and give him a compliment or whatever. (chad is from chester i believe. not sure about the others). i went to see mansun at a local venue just after they'd made it, on the strength of their then recent 45 'wide open space' which i liked a lot. i have to admit that until that night i had no idea they were local. it was only when this bloke came over to talk to my girlfriend that i found this out. he was married to drapers sister (still is as far as i know) and he knew some of my girlfriends family from way back when. anyway, to cut a long story short, he gave us passes for the post-gig party up stairs. now this is the only time i've ever had such an invite and would you believe i didn't go. we were having such a good time downstairs that by the time we thought we'd venture upstairs it was finishing. so...that was that! chester is a small-ish 'roman' city about 15-20 miles from Liverpool. it's right on the border with wales and indeed there are ancient walls still standing which were designed to keep the welsh out (i'm reliably informed that the legislation that allows an englishman to shoot a welsh person found within the walls after a certain time of night has never been officially repealed!). it's actually a very popular city with americans - gets quite a lot of tourists there to see the history of the place. going back to mansun, i think they're unfairly treated by the british press (i think they suspect drapers ever changing image and occasional eye-liner). i think i might be repeating myself here, but tho 'little kix' isn't as ambitious as 'six', i much prefer it. really good album i think. hope they get a fairer hearing this time round. keith ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 16:22:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Britt Subject: [idealcopy] Billy Bragg TONIGHT on........... I love Happy Mondays - Bummed, those piledriving drums (Hannett trade-mark) , bar-room pianos, banjos, Mark Days brilliantly sleazy council-estate bluegrass guitar, grunting pigs and high frequency squeaks and whirrs, samples from 'Performance' and 'Gimme Shelter'. Shaun Ryder at his most boggle -eyed and freaky. This was the LP that made 'Madchester'. Forget that lousy 60s hommage that was 'The Stone Roses'. Its Martin Hannett versus John Leckie. No competetion! I've also been listening to Exit Body Exit Mind by the New Fads, which must be one of Hannetts last works...its superb. The scene where he gets wheeled on stage by the Mondays in the 24hpp film was inspired by the New Fads making a video in the Hacienda where they wheeled a (by this time grossly overweight) Hannett around in a shopping trolley. If nothing else, that film is very clear the Hannett is the true genius of the whole story. Along with Rob Gretton.
