Must say that this is the first Wire disc, not including compilations, to sound utterly enjoyable and fathomable on the first listen. Previous releases always had at least a couple songs--Manscape and The First Letter had a lot--that took a long while for me to warm up to, to "get". Not so on R & B. Straight ahead, crank 'em to 11 fun. Which is a side to Wire that I think is often overlooked. Most articles paint them as "serious artists" whereas I've often thought of them as artists of a more childlike curiosity. That is, their previous work has always had a sense of "what happens if we do this?" and then, after finding out, moving on to a new curiosity. The interview they did in The Big Takeover a few issues ago really accented that part of their approach. So what's the curiosity that they're approaching on R & B? Not sure, other than whether fun noise can still be made within the confines of the traditional r n r set-up (voice, guitar, bass, drums). I think it's safe to say that the hypothesis has been proven true. While this ep isn't going to bend twist your brain, I think it's safe to say that they've proven they're still relevant and able to beat kids half their age at their own game (indeed, it sounds like they could have made it when they were half their current age--somewhere between Pink Flag and Chairs Missing). Who knows, maybe this will be the album that finally gains them a wider audience. Pleased as punch, Neil Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H.L. Alright I know you're in a bad mood but Frippertronics is OK by me. King Crimsons Red album & the Live USA are also worth their weight in anyones collection. OK you asked for it The Wire (including project) Top 10 albums. There are no if's or but's. 1. 154 2 Dome 1 3. He Said - Take Care 4. Chairs Missing 5. IBTABA 6. A-Z 7. Pink Flag 8.Duet Emmo 9.Insiding 10.A Bell Is A Cup After putting it in black & white the only thing that hits me straight away is how "low down " Pink Flag is at No 7.I remember vividly playing Reuters & knowing even then it was a special LP. But for that extroadinary music experience which only happens once in a while I cannot forget the amazement of hearing Dome 1 for the first time. It was so very differant & also struck such a chord within me that it has remained to this day one of the best surprises I have had buying a record.I really didn't know what to expect. However that is 22 years ago. I have yet to get Read & Burn.It sounds worth having. !54 is my all time fave. It's alot of other peoples too. Why ? It has truly great ground breaking songs. What if you had to choose one would be the one to take with you into another world.I refuse to name the 10 at least that come to mind.I hope you do too.My favourite (& it is murder to committ to just one is)... I don't know how successfully I got it across, but my writing about the 2000 tour dates I saw (RFH, SFx2) tried to get some of that across. There was just something so... essentially Wire about the shows -- the group knowing what they have, appreciating it, enjoying it. A lot of the lasting images I have from the tour have to do with things like how perched at the center of this huge ferocious blaring lurching wonderful din of Robert pounding away, Graham attacking his bass, and Bruce's fingertips effortlessly bringing forth sounds that were closer to a machine gone amuck than a guitar part, there stood Colin hunched over his guitar, wavering like a tuning fork, letting the sounds excite his atoms. Well, that's a lot of incoherent words, but it gets close to what I want to say about them, and this approach, and what they sort of always were and more than ever *are.* later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 07:18:04 +0100 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] read & burn > << anyone else out there think that 'germ ship' sounds like 'is vic there?' >> > > See where you're coming from, but the bass line is Idiot Joy Showland off > Shift-Work by the Fall ;-) > Mark yeah, i can see where you're coming from too.
