I got backstage after a gig in about 1974 and the only thing I had that was signable was the book I was reading at the time - 'The Reprieve' by Sartre. So I got them to sign it. Pretentious? Moi? 'Pawn Hearts' came out when I was about 16, and I just played that to death for about 10 years, and saw Van der Graaf & Hammill gigs all over the place. Eventually though I drifted away, I'm still not sure why. You have to admit, there were some duff albums (World Record! Over!) for a while. I still think some of the things - mostly Van der Graaf rather than Hammill solo works, and most especially Pawn Hearts - are great, and it does feel strange to look at the racks of Hammill product in Tower Records and not even know what three quarters of them sound like. I always thought he was a bit of a genius. I was just wondering if anyone knew what became of him. He played in Dublin in the early 80's, reciting against a backing tape of Martin Hannet's Invisible Girls. It was a laugh. Especially when he recited The Pest (where practically every word begins with a P), word perfect at breakneck speed. I last saw him in Dublin in 93, looking exactly the same, reading from crumpled sheets of foolscap which he pulled out of a plastic shopping bag. I think he had about one new poem. When he got requests, he was keen on doing them, it was just that he was slightly at a loss as to how they began, and asked for prompts... which reminds me of a great put down he had for a belicose punter who shouted "shut your mouth and give your brain a chance" JCC replied: "I can't hear you mate, your mouth's full of shit" Classic... I'd love to see that documentary they did about him again, called Ten Years In An Open Necked Shirt... " ...Keith Joseph smiles and a baby dies, in a box on Beasley street..." Good to hear good things about Pavement! I totally agree with Pavement being the best band of the 90's and I think the fact they are linked to the Fall is just valid for the first perhaps the second album. But there always was a very distinctive sound of their own [wich in its turn influenced bands like Sammy or Yatsura - doesn't every band stand on the shoulders of it's predecessors]. I was truely was a sad day when they split. Stephen Malmus solo album was a treat allright, but IMO it never reaches the level of any Pavement outlet. Like I said to John earlier - Pavement have been on the Larry Sanders show once... anyone saw it?
