(and as for all that flag waving, don't get me started - even the mullet was less naff than that...) i thought the singles off 'the joshua tree' were brill though and i liked the way they pissed off a lot of fans in the early 90's by discovering 'irony' and having the edge singing lead vocs on a single. i recall having an arguement with a lad who insisted that they had a duty to make records that the fans would like as supposed to the record the band wanted to make. (this lad was, incidentally, a status quo fan!). whilst we're talking about U2, i've just read in the guardian that last saturdays 'the big match' didn't have the usual theme tune ('beautiful day') because the queen mum had died and therefore it wasn't a beautiful day. as the guardian pointed out 'from now on then, when you hear that song it's safe to assume Saturday is officially beautiful, notwithstanding war, suicide, bombings or other nasty news'. fave U2 track? - hmmm, i think i'll go for 'i will follow' or 'with or without you'. keith p.s. i can honestly claim to never having had a mullet. will the ex-mulletheads please step forward!!! - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: ; Cc: Sent: Saturday, April 06, 2002 1:07 AM Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Virgin's 5 for L30 Offer (was (OT) Heavy Rotation) > Andrew my friend, I think Boy, October, War, and The Unforgettable Fire are > absolutely smashing...no matter what is hip at any given moment...those are > just solid records right down the middle...documents of a raw but talented > band with a hunger...no matter what my opinion of U2 is now, i will never try > to take any of the shine off of those brilliant albums.....I loved that era > so much that i actually recorded a cassette of the full Under A Blood Red Sky > video..yep! my friend was the first in the neighborhood to hook up his vcr/tv > to his family's awesome hi-fi system..so i made an awesome sounding cassette > which i still have to this day..of course i made some duplicates in case > something happened to them!..It always pissed me off that the actual cd was > so damn short..They cut out the best parts! Ian, > it certainly would seem that way my friend...last week i had the misfortune > to hear Dale Winton play 'Fancy Pants' by Kenny, beat that for a 'real > horror show' moment!!!<< A fascinating study in manufactured pop, Kenny. Originally was a singer called Kenny, who got into a contract dispute with Chinn & Chapman after one single (Heart of Stone). C&C replaced him with a manufactured band. Did the teenyboppers notice? Did they f*ck! And my, were their pants fancy! Giant multi-hued patchwork loons, topped with t-shirts bearing the Kelloggs K. Today they'd be sponsored, of course. No jokes about Sugar Puffs. > >>as far as Leo goes, 'Long Tall Glasses' was the crucial cut for me... ;)< leo may have been pants, (in a different sense to Keny) but it's hard to imagine as left-field a record as The show must go on making number 1 today. Sung by a clown. One of MOR pop's more out-there moments... the best of which is of course David Essex's mighty Rock On, still an astonishing record.... Check out Space Blues by Felt for a fine homage from the ever-reliably odd Lawrence... (i hate the little twat) leo's only no. one was 'when i need you' - written by albert hammond, father of albert hammond jnr in the strokes. > Sung by a clown. One of MOR pop's more out-there moments... the best of which > is of course David Essex's mighty Rock On, still an astonishing record.... Mark you're right. 'rock on' is indeed a great record. and a nice little link to your comments on kellogs and kenny, david essex's debut album featured a version of the music used in the corn flakes ad ('let the sun come into your life'). the other great david essex song is 'stardust' - similar in feel to 'rock on' and with one of the few pre-punk guitar solo's i like. Denim played this and Middle of the Road on Later once, a truly excellent TV moment. Which, in a nicely circular way, leads me to a shite TV moment of recent days. When I had the old Sky analogue satellite system a couple of years ago I had access to tons of abysmal German stations. Most German telly is utter shite, with big variety shows that could have been made any time in the past four decades with the same acts. Presenters are usually fading oompah superstars like Horst "walk in the black forest" Jankowski. Like a rabbit caught in a BMW's headlights, I once watched one of these shows from start to finish, where the dismal parade of Bavarian thigh-slapping was headlined by....Middle of the Road. Still big in Dusseldorf, apparently. Mark ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 18:51:49 -0800 From: "Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: [idealcopy] A nice present! Hi everyone, Something cool happened today. My friend Ryan went on vacation back to his home town, and returned with some of his old records in tow. I went over to his apartment today to help set up his turntable and because he said "I have a present for you". After getting his turntable set up, I started flipping through the records he brought back. It's quite an eclectic collection of records - some were originally his, some were his Dad's, and some were his Grandfather's. I noticed an original copy of the U.S. edition of Pink Flag - in pretty good shape - and commented on it. I never figured Ryan to be a fan of Wire - - he's a jazz bassist, with a little punk rock history. Well - you guessed it - that record was my present. Interesting thing about the cover - it's the standard Pink Flag cover, but there's a little warning about some of the language on Field Day For The Sundays, and Mr. Suit. I had never seen that warning before. I'm listening to it right now. Nice present, huh?
