The Fad Gadget star is believed to have died at his home on April 3. He played at the Swedish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA) in Gothenburg on April 1, and was currently working on new material. In a posting on his official website, www.fadgadget.co.uk Tovey said he was planning to appear at music festivals this summer. Daniel Miller, founder of Fad Gadget's record label Mute said: "Frank was the first artist I ever worked with on Mute, he made some very special and influential records and was an exceptional live performer. "Frank played a big part in helping to lay the foundations of what the label was to become in the ensuing years, I will miss him greatly." Fad Gadget was the opening act for the European leg of the recent Depeche Mode Exciter world tour. Alongside Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal, Tovey was at the forefront of the Electronic Movement of the late '70s and early '80s. CERTAIN GENERAL - An Introduction to War (SourMash 201) During the early and mid-seventies, it was mostly progressive, jazz/rock and avant-jazz that I was into. By the end of the 70's, it was back to rock again (punk/new wave) thanks to Television, Talking Heads & Elvis Costello, as well as no-wave bands like DNA, Pere UbuS Besides befriending the early downtown scene, I was also checking out tons of bands known and little known - at CB's, Maxwells, the Pep, Danceteria, etc. I recall two bands from the early eighties that often played together with much fondness - Certain General and Band of Outsiders. Both were great double guitar, bass and drum bands with intriguing songs and with some riveting psych guitar buzzing that I always ate up. I could never figure why both of these bands never got the recognition they deserved. This fine double cd set collects some 40 plus songs from studio and live dates from 1981-1985 and it brings back loads of memories. I was probably at a few of these gigs. This collection also includes an informative booklet with their history and pictures. Nifty two cd set for $20. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Apr 2002 00:15:34 +0100 From: Andrew Walkingshaw Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Virgin's 5 for L30 Offer (was (OT) Heavy Rotation) On Fri, Apr 05, 2002 at 04:18:21PM +0200, Bart van Damme wrote: > Andrew wrote: (seems to be an off-list reply, but I'll copy it back there: could just be my MUA being confused) > > I took advantage of the same offer, but my choices are probably more > > ridiculable: U2 - "War", Pixies - "Bossanova", Smashing Pumpkins - > > "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", PJ Harvey - "Stories from the > > City, Stories from the Sea", Daft Punk - "Homework". [with the exception of Pumpkin's ridiculous > album-title of course] Well, depends on which particular brand of more-alternative-than-you cred has the upper hand at any given moment in time :) U2 get a lot of flack for, basically, being popular and successful (and some of their chest-beating can be a bit over the top); the Pumpkins never were ones to avoid melodrama where it was available; and (though I doubt many would use this argument on this list) that Daft Punk, it's not real music, carved from solid oak and aged for twenty years, is it? Speaking as someone who has a terminally-low boredom threshold, I subscribe to none of these theories; but I hear them all too often when talking to people less ... umm... obsessed with music than I am.
