I mix up the list everyday. I'll have a better trend later this week, when my "work CD grab" stabilizes. However, I *will* tell you what my latest purchases are: "Lust In Phaze" - Soul Coughing Yes, they've released a "new" CD. Unfortunately, it's a greatest hits compilation. However, there is one Ruby Vroom outtake ("Buddha rhubarb butter"), one non-album track ("Unmarked Helicopters" - from the X-files series companion CD), one Propellerheads remix ("Super Bon Bon") and one live cut ("Casiotone nation"). Track annotation by M. Doughty. Nice package, from Rhino records. I'm sure I'll be playing this all week. No "Down to this", though.... "Millenium Edition" - Shonen Knife A Japan-only collection of, oddly enough, American CD releases, so it's all in English. Nice compilation - cool Holographic cover. Covers the last three CDs or so, plus some rare single releases. The only weird thing is that because their bass player/alternate vocalist Michie left (after 20 years!), there are no songs with her vocals, even though she sings on about half the tracks on those records. "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" - Jeff Buckley Another part of my Japan order, this is the Japanese edition of this CD. It contains two bonus tracks on disc 2 - "Gunshot Glitter" and "Thousand Fold". These are, of course, 4 track demos. I already had the U.S. version of this disc, but after reading Dream Brother (the Jeff & Tim Buckley biography) I decided to hunt down these tracks. "Memories Are My Only Witness" - Yuka Honda Instrumental solo album from 1/2 of Cibo Matto. Interesting. Sounds like Cibo Matto backing tracks, like you might expect, though not as compelling as I'd hoped. Jury's still out on this one. "Spike" - PuffyAmiYumi Heard about this CD on National Public Radio. I was expecting something along the lines of Shonen Knife meets Beck. Instead, it's more like Pizzicato Five meets...um...well...Josie and the Pussycats. Girl group powerpop sung in Japanese. And, this is the U.S. edition. Kinda cute - I don't think it's essential though. We'll see if I'm playing it in a month. "The Thunderthief" - John Paul Jones 2nd solo CD from the former Led Zeppelin bass player on Discipline Global Mobile - Robert Fripp's record label. Much like Zooma, this has some pretty nifty instrumental work, with JPJ playing most of the instruments. He now has Terl Bryant from Peter Murphy's band on drums, and Robert Fripp and Nick Beggs (ex-Kajagoogoo, now Chapman Stick player) guest. A cool release, but with a big IF. A cool release IF you can get past JPJ's vocals on about half the tracks. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Your tolerance level may vary. Okay - that's about it for now. Inverted commas or not, I must say that to call MBV 'Shoegazing' is like calling the Beatles 'Merseybeat'. Then again, that makes Ride 'Gerry and The Pacemakers' ....so maybe its not such a bad idea. Chapterhouse would be The Swinging Blue Jeans! Ride had four good songs. Lush maybe two. Slowdive got loads more bad press than any of this lot but, as Robert rightly points out, Souvlaki wasn't half bad...in fact its a monster record..and will no doubt start changing hands for #50 on Ebay in a few years time before someone cottons on and re-releases it. Brian Eno seems to have forgotten he worked on a couple of tunes if you read his book. Two more really good records that may be branded as 'Shoegazing' are 'Everythings Alright Forever' by Boo Radleys and 'In Ribbons' by Pale Saints. Both bands having a good crack at that MBV thing of harnessing noise and feedback to make melody with some success. Those two bands have a lot in common. I once saw them both on the same bill, they played brilliant sets and I bought their records. But both had only two good albums in them (In Ribbons by Pale Saints is superb and Giant Steps by The Boo Radleys is a forgotten classic and was NME record of the year once if i'm not mistaken....) ....and I witnessed both play utterly dire gigs about four years later....Pale Saints after Ian Masters had left to explore his own backside and Boo Radleys after they had finally drunk all their talent away and pissed it down the Mersey....and there we are full circle back at the Cavern!
