No surprises there, as it turned out. I know nothing of his career post This Heat, though it seemed the Indian sub-continent played a major part in his life- he co-authored the Rough Guide to India, among other enterprises. So the evening kicks off with Sri Lankan singer Jaya Arungirinatham. It would end rather differently.... In This Heat, Gareth played the Gilbert role - the non-musician in the band, adding tape loops, bass and keyboards to the band's volatile stew. He was also the band's glue - while Charleses Bullen and Hayward fell out, both remained friends with Gareth Williams. And both were on the bill. Inevitably, there was a degree of sentimentality to the event - aside from the seven Idealcopyists in attendance, most of the crowd were probably personal friends. So some of the performances bordered on mawkish, while others seemed inexplicable given the life they sought to celebrate. Gareth Sager's brief atonal prepared sax piece, for example. Or the four clowns who treated us to the worst kind of prog guitar wank-out, succeeding in driving most of the audience into the 93Ft East's plush bar. Dave Bernez, Alex Garacotche, Simeon Harris and Tony Marsh - thanks. We'll call you. In the meantime there was Charles Hayward. Still recognisable as the intense, scowling leader of This Heat, he steals the show - well until the last act! Playing drums (with considerable force and skill) and singing, with backing tapes, his two songs are as near as you'll come to This Heat now. A memorable performance. The distance between Messrs Hayward and Bullen is brought into sharp focus just by looking at them. The sharply dressed Hayward is still the man who insisted the squat-dwelling This Heat wore shirts and ties (obtained from Oxfam) so they could look their perceived oppressors in the eye. Charles Bullen today could make a decent living as an Osama bin Laden impersonator. Musically they poles apart too. Bullen provides an quiet, ambient guitar piece, accompanied by a saxophonist. It's lost in the aftermath of the prog duffers that preceded it. Wire end up headlining - and it's worth the wait. It's 15 months since they last played live. They haven't rehearsed. But they've been busy, collating more than 20 songs at Swim studios, with Colin and Bruce working together twice a week on the material. It promises to be, said Mr N, "the best Wire ever". And you'll be able to hear some of it sooner than you might have thought.... Taking 12 times you as a starting point, new Wire is loud, fast and hard. Closest comparison is the more extreme D&E stuff from 22 years ago. The first song is circular and building, with Colin, minus guitar, hunched centre stage over the microphone. The second is based round a fantastic Gilbert guitar loop, and is propelled by Rob's ferocious whiplash snare. It stops and starts several times. Utterly exhiliarating. Pink Flag closes - stripped to the minimum, simplified to a skeleton. And they're gone. Now for that ATP warm-up gig, please gentlemen!
