Uri reckoned the sound was a bit ropey, at least for first song, but frankly I was too pissed and happy to care. Apart from Wire, the rest of the evening was pretty desperate. On another night I might have enjoyed some of the solo acapella singers (complete with micro-tonal intervals, from what I heard). But most of it was a sort of `20 reasons to cancel your subscription to Wire magazine'. Good to see you/meet you, those who were there. Howard ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 15:20:53 -0000 From: "Keith Astbury" Subject: [idealcopy] A Beard of Wires Think I mentioned recently that I'd read in Kevin's book that wire said that '12XU' was them trying to be T.Rex and that as a Bolan fan myself I couldn't see it, but after getting the 'IAITB' CD I think I finally know where they were coming from. The instrumental bit towards the end is 'Elemental Child' off the final Bolan-goes-electric Tyrannosaurus Rex album 'A Beard of Stars'. This is pretty unusual because I can rarely hear any influences in Wire's music. I think that though most of the early punk/new wave bands immediately had their own sound, with the benefit of hindsight you can hear some influences in their music (particularly the Stooges though I didn't know really know it at the time - 'Damned Damned Damned' for example is a speeded up Stooges/MC5 I just didn't know their music at the time), but Wire...well the speed they played most of 'Pink Flag' obviously shows they had been listening to what was happening in the world at the time, but didn't IMO reveal a whole lot of what they'd been listening to BEFORE. I know that circa 'Chairs Missing' wire were labelled the new wave Pink Floyd (though how much of that came from the similarity between the name of that dinosaur rock band and Wire's debut album I don't know), but there are only a couple of tracks ('I Am The Fly' is the most obvious) that you could say 'yeah, they've listened to a bit of Syd Barrett in their time'. Otherwise they just sound like Wire. In fact the only other wire track that (off the top of my head) sounds noticeably like anyone else is 'Ahead' with it's obvious new order type bass riff, though whether this was just down to commercial considerations only they could answer. And yet even then - for all it's 'graham does hooky' comparisons, 'Ahead' is ultimately still very much a Wire song. Any thoughts on this? I always thought Marooned [one of my fave Wire tracks!] to be the most Pink Floyd influenced Wire-track. But Pink Flag also has a few more or less psychedelic gems like Strange and the chorus of Mannequin [though I don't necessarily think of Pink Floyd here] > Otherwise they > just sound like Wire.
