GW sure knew a lot of people. it started with a female sri lankan singer / tabla duo and then chazza "the chin" hayward (as he was never known) did his solo set. drumming and singing to backing tapes , he did 2 long numbers. boy , he is one serious and intense performer. i think they were camberwell now songs , sure i'd heard them before. now i know some will disagree with me on this , but i really enjoyed this set and i guess that's as close as i'll ever get to seeing this heat live. mind you , i chickened out of the plan to get his autograph as he didn't look the type :-) the general drill was that all the acts did about 15 minutes. for the next couple of hours we saw a variety of turns , varying from the passable to (it cannot be denied) the fucking atrocious. nobody seemed to know who most of the acts were , in several cases i think we'll happilly leave it that way. 2 acts i will comment on. gareth sager's set was about 3 minutes of atonal unaccompanied sax with his back to the audience. cheers gareth , you spoil us. but the nadir was an act called (i think , the continuity announcer gave up after the first couple of acts) L.voag. this was 4 50-something musos treating us to a free-form jazz-rock odyssey. tribute gig or no , i'm afraid i couldn't hold back the tears of laughter , the biggest load of old toss i've witnessed in years. also i nearly got into trouble for talking over a thumb piano solo in one of the other acts. i thought this hippy woman was going to smack me one , must behave better in future. yep , it was one of those nights. well i'd figured the 2 this heat guys would play together but it never happened , shame really but i gather they're not exactly bosom buddies. so wire ended up "headlining" , which i didn't think would be the way of it at all (hence i showed up at the start..........). and , much as 76 followed 75 , the evening turned into something different completely. thankfully the lads were on fine form and well worth the wait. 2 new songs and pink flag , all performed in a wonderfully snotty and abrasive way. for the first 2 numbers colin didn't play guitar , just prowled the stage with his mike doing the business. graham stage left concentrating hard and mostly studying his bass in a baggy suit. bruce getting stuck in stage right , loads of that gilbert noise. rob without much to do in the first number (bass drum over a rhythm track ; look no hands) but getting down to it afterwards. the new songs were loud , punky , great. then on with colin's guitar for a wave of "pink flag" , the new drill of course. storming ending and i hope gareth felt suitably tributised , would have done for me. well i hear there's plenty more where that came from , can't wait to hear some more of this new stuff. boy they're gonna blow those indie kids socks off at ATP , fingers firmly crossed for a warm-up gig as i'd just love to see it all again , but longer. great meeting up there , so hi to mark , uri , howard , kevin , craig and alastair and hope for a repeat before too long. it's gonna be good. p ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Mar 2002 20:18:17 EST From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] gareths gig yeah, but where was Graeme Rowland??? Examples anyone? how about this one Bart - not a big emotion, just a very big question... 'Do you have a big intellectual capacity but know that it alone does not equate wisdom?' (from the new Alanis Morissette 'under rug swept' LP) well know I don't think I have a big intellectual capacity thanks for asking, but I do know that this 'equates' shite. Definitely a line to sweep under your rug Alanis... Call me a sad old fart if you want, but you can give me 'make no mistake about jungle face jake' anyday!
