(out end of march apparently) and one thing i really liked recently - heard a track by a band called something like McCluskey on peel the other night. produced by steve albini it was a nice slab of noisy, energetic pop that caused peel to mention that it may be time for a bogshed revival. i couldn't hear the connection myself - but it was a great track all the same... keith ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 06:30:25 EST From: PaulRabjohn@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] buzzkunst it starts off really well with an electro 'i > feel love'/'homosapien' type intro before howard starts singing in his unique > mannered voice. unfortunately, the chorus is a bit too like midge ure for my > ears ////you aren't selling this to me very well. the only midge-related record i own is the rich kids album (you can program out the midge tracks on the cd player) and i'd like to keep it that way. thinks ; maybe i could invent a piece of software where you could punch in the writer you wished to avoid and it would read the label and skip those tracks. diggle , ure , moulding , might be a big success :-) p ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 06:14:07 -0800 (PST) From: John Roberts Subject: Re: [idealcopy] playlist I went to see PSB at De Montfort University last night. I think that you're using the wrong frame of reference to view the Crane's Alison Shaw. She's not in the Liz Frazer school. In the amazingly wonderfull book that I am now reading - " The Sex Revolts - Gender, Rebellion and Rock 'n Roll" by Simon Reynolds and Joy Press, Press (I assume) has this to say in the chapter Open Your Heart, subsection Angel with a Broken Wing: Even so, the late '80s and early '90's saw rock culture take a sudden interest in female subjectivity. Just as '60s rock admired and envied black experience for the intensity and authenticity endowed by a history of suffering, so recent rock has begun to regard women as the ultimate outsider. ... Wildly different singers and performers - Bjork Gudmundsdottir of the Sugarcubes, Sinead O'Connor, Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Alison Shaw of the Cranes, Polly Harvey - became the focus of what we call the Betty Blue Syndrome: the seemingly unbalanced woman whose intesity elicits, from (male) fans and critics, both envious awe and protective feelings. It's an appealing fantasy for men who long for a girl they can save and heal: they can write themselves into the script as a knight in shining armour coming to the girl's emotional rescue. The woman's artistic powers are inextricably linked, in his imagination, with her lack of control over herself; often, it seems that she can't help herself, that her creativity comes to her from an external realm..... Many of the most recent singers pegged with the Betty Blue Syndrome possess an ethereal image - glamorous but gauzy, soft-focus and desexualised. It's a look designed to provoke awa and tenderness rather than lust. Being "etherreal" is a good compromise betwen the desire to be glamourous and an aversion to being ogled - it de-emphasises the body, while still evoking a more abstract, mythical femininity. Being otherworldly implies being out of reach, shaking off mundane definitions and demands. Unfortunately, the mystic child-woman image tends to invite a more sophisiticated male gaze - ne that rhapsodises rather than drools - - but just as surely turns the chanteuse into an object of fantasy. ... ... Alison Shaw, singer of Cranes, also became the focus of a weird mix of voyeurism and empathy. Framed in hers band's ominous techno-goth soundscapes, Shaw's disturbed and disturbing voice - a sort of kindergarten version of avant-dive Diamanda Galas's glossolalia - triggered much sepulation about the traumas that shaped it. Thpical metaphors usually involve padded cells or nine-year-old girls locked in attics. In many ways, this cult of the ethereal/damaged girl singer is just an updated version of the worshop of the torch singer as an "angel with a broken wing" ...... The article then goes on to talk about Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin. I'm very disappointed that the article didn't take the opportunity to talk about what I consider a most interesting case - Katie Jane Garside of Daisy Chainsaw who might have been the uber-Ophelia of modern rock. - Steve. The album also includes the track Ambition referred to by Keith. The album is quite different from the earlier Compass - it was released on WEA (via their Korova offshoot - a la Bunnymen) and enjoys somewhat better production values than Compass, including female backing vocals in places (although no vacuum cleaner solos). The personnel are also different from the first album, Gill being the only constant and its certainly worth tracking down if you can find it. The tracks are varied in style and while there is nothing to match the exuberant pop of Reward, they do provide further evidence of Gill's ability to craft a decent tune. I agree with Keith that Gill could almost certainly have carried on from Reward, but he chose to leave the Teardrops (one of the few to quit that band of their own accord) as if he felt he'd proved a point, had a hit, and didn't need to carry on doing the same.
