We do know that "copacetic" first appeared in American English around the turn of the century, and was current in Black usage, especially among jazz musicians, for many years before entering the general popular vocabulary. The first and greatest exponent of "copacetic" was, in fact, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949), an extremely popular Black entertainer and probably the greatest tap dancer in history. There are, of course, plenty of theories about "copacetic." Some authorities trace it to an Italian word "copissettic," supposedly meaning "excellent," but others point to a Creole-French word, "coupersetique," or "able to be coped with." Yet another is the Yiddish connection you mention, based on the Hebrew phrase "kol ba seder," meaning "all in order." This theory raises the question, of course, of how a Hebrew phrase would come to be current in American Black English. The most oft-heard explanation is that Jewish shopkeepers, when asked "How's it going?", might well have replied with "kol ba seder," which was then picked up in phonetic form as "copacetic" by his customers. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to support this or any of the other theories, so the book remains open on "copacetic." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- >>Miles thus >><"copacetic.">> >> >>Now I never thought this was such an unusual word to hear in a song lyric >>I can't quote the tunes but both Dr John and Lee Scratch Perry I have heard >>use it...I took it to be N'Orleans patois meaning cool & funky or >>somesuch...can anyone supply the definitive meaning? >> >>A > > >i could go do actual research in an appropriate dictionary or website, but >it's much more fun to operate without a net, as it were ... i'm pretty sure >that "cool & funky" is a decent definition. i think it's slang dating from >the jazz age ('20s, maybe), possibly coined in a comic strip (maybe even >barney google/snuffy smith), though offhand i'm unaware of any nola >connections. i could also, of course, be dead, dead wrong. > >dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 10:04:20 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Nosferatu/Jamie Gumm Jonathan Demme is well-known for slipping his favourite music into his films. In addition to what's been stated before, there's a couple of other things to check. First of all, you want to make sure that you're using "Line Out" of your cassette deck to "Line In" on your computer. Don't use Headphone out from the cassette deck or Mic in on the sound card - this requires careful matching of signal levels to work properly. Next, open the Windows volume control (usually hidden on the Start - -->programs ---> Accessories--> multimedia menu) , and select Properties from the Options menu. In the properties dialog box, select "Adjust Volume for recording", and then make sure the Line In volume control is checked. Click OK, and the dialog box should now be labeled "Recording Control". Now, select "Advanced Controls" from the Options menu, and see if a button appears below the Line In slider. If there's no button below the Line In slider, then you should be good to go. If there is a button, click it, and make sure all "automatic level controls" are turned off (if present.) Good Luck!! They have survived the 80's, the 90's and their hit "Under The Milky Way" and are still going strong. This is floating, melancholic neo-psychedelic music, in which you can dwell pleasantly sedated. After Everything Now This is a highly lyrical and textured work. The way the acoustic and electric guitars are ringing, chiming and swirling is even more refined and vibrant than before. It's not just that the songs are full of meaty hooks, but it's the way the subtler elements in their sound come together that puts it over the top. Listen to how Steve Kilbey's distant, breathy vocals and harmonies mesh with the mellifluous guitars and sparse keyboard sprinklings, and to how the rhythm section sets the tone for each song, gracefully building and subsiding, framing Kilbey's oft dark words and feelings. Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes unsurprisingly once again do some fine work on guitar and Powles' drumming is revelato! ry, capable of both straight-ahead rock surge and more complex, subtle work informed by other traditions.
