Sounds very fourth division in its production - horrible out of tune melodica etc. Could be one of many of the never-was bands of the era. I have one further suggestion - there was a band called Strange Arrangement who hailed from round where I'm from- West Surrey. They never had a proper deal as far as I know but, handily enough, their bass player, one Neil Ashby, had an Uncle who owned K-tel! Hence their mysterious appearance on a number of compliations from the era - and perhaps, hence their appearance on your tape. I have no real evidence that it is them, beyond a vague recollection of the singer's very mannered delivery, which might tally. Apologies if the mystery has been solved - I get the digest. According to Kevin's book Wire played the Variety theatre in LA on July 1 & 2 1987, but not on September 27. Could have been 88 - Wire were in Tokyo on Septenber 21 88 and could have come back via LA to play the gig. They'd played in LA that June. Other than that yep, she's only on Sextet. Joined some time in early 81 (via New York connections - To Each was recorded there) and had gone by early 82. Simon Topping was quite deeply affected by Ian Curtis' suicide and basically didn't want to be a front man. Probably ACR's biggest problem - nobody wanted to stand at the front of the stage and sing. Hardly any songs had the same people playing the same instruments. Donald Johnson did some of the vocals (which meant either Moscrop or Topping had to drum - eg on the single release of Knife Slits Water). Eventually Jez Kerr took on the job, by which time they'd lost all the early momentum. He used to have a genuine one but git it nicked - now I think he has the Hohner version. He uses the P-bass most of the time but used the Hohner for the He Said set at the RFH. Bruce uses some anonymous-looking but fearsone-sounding modern guitars that are custom set-up. He uses two different tunings, one of which is open. Don't know about amps - never really studied the back line. Clearly there are a few effects in use as well. Robert has added a few more drums to his minimal 80s kit (just bass, snare, hi-hat). Obviously in the studio it all changes and much more technology is used. But that was the basic live set-up in 2000. I think their cover of Frosty the Snowman is brilliant! OK its just a bit of fun but its still a great version. Liz manages to render the lyrics unitelligible, and Robin adds a little twist to the chord changes on the middle 8 which is classic Cocteau Twins. A couple of years ago we played at a Xmas party thing with various other Manchester bands doing Xmas songs and we did a cover of 'Frosty' based around the Cocteaus version but using the riff from 'Its Almost Summer' by Brian Wilson..backwards...as well. I have an MP3 of the CT song but I'm not sure what else was on the EP. I passed on a copy for 4.99 a couple of years ago. Kicking myself now. How much does it go for on Ebay? Baritones are six stringed instruments pitched midway between a bass and a guitar - usually tuned 1/5th below a standard guitar (a-d-g-c-e-a). Hence Wire's new muscular sound.
