Dreams Never End and Doubts Even Here remain among my favourite NO moments. He also sang the original version of Mesh (ie not the song on Substance!) The only other singer considered was Kevin Hewick (erk!) who recorded some songs with NO backing him. One (Haystack) was released on a Crepuscule compilation. Wouldn't have worked.... >> i heard a really good track off pauls last album - i don't know whether anyone can recommend the rest ? - though it's a shame he's resorted to making predominantly instrumental records, cos his vocal contributions to the mackenzie/haig 'memory palace' album reminded me what a great voice he had. it might be limited in range - especially when compared to billy's vocal gymnastics - but there's something - a warmth ? a resonance ? (particularly on the gorgeous 'i believe in you' 45) - that sets him apart from pretty much everybody else... >> Post-Josef K Paul Haig made a couple of nice singles for Crepuscule and then took a big shot at commercial success with the very glossy Rhythm of Life album - and failed dismally. It's hard to imagine why - right producer, top session men etc. But nothing, so it was back to Crepuscule for a succession of slick electronic pop singles and albums with diminishing returns. A lost star in the 80s, for sure. I'd recommend European Sun, which collects a lot of the pre-first album Crepuscule stuf and later unreleased songs plus a couple of songs recorded with the fantastic early 80s live band he had, with Malcolm Ross (JK) on guitar, Alan Rankine on keyboards, David McClymont (orange juice) on bass and Toby (Blue Orchids, Ludus, Nico etc) on drums. Of the three 'proper' albums The warp of pure fun is the best one. All out of print but I can't imagine there's much demand. Check Netsounds/Gemm. So allow me some self indulgence, my dear booze and speed addled friends.....or just skip to the next post. I know there are other Brian Wilson fans on this list so can I just say that my friends and I drove through driving rain, sleet and snow to Glasgow this weekend to see Brian and he was so incredible that the whole thing felt like some strange dream. I don't want to go on about it too much because its off topic but Brian was brilliant beyond belief and unlike his peers McCartney, Jagger, Townshend, Dylan and that lot he is still the absolute picture of cool...albeit a bit damaged and a little bit bonkers. Brian did a kind of Ian Curtis style hand jive throughout and sometimes gestured as if doing sign language for the lyrics. He sat behind a keyboard which he didn't actually play but used as some kind of high-tech security blanket. During the instrumentals he turned around to face the band and watched like a proud father watching his kids at a school play. Every so often his voice managed to soar beyond 35 years of drink/drugs/fags and hamburgers and he hit the high notes. Wilson clearly has learned to understand the way his fans consume his music and so he played a set which pleased all his fans, from the casual to the completely besotted like me. And yes he did play loads of his darker stuff from the early 70s and three tracks from "Smile"! A dream set no less. To put the show in some context you can all understand, If this had been a Wire show, it would have gone as follows: (All of Wire on stage, plus Mike Thorne on keyboards and whoever else you want to be there) Part 1: Wire open with a couple of verses of 'Line Up' by Elastica (Wilson opened with 'Brian Wilson' by Barenaked Ladies) and then proceed to play a selection from their 85-92 era including Eardrum Buzz, Kidney Bingoes, In Vivo, Serious of Snakes etc. a couple of brilliant new songs, a few highlights from their solo/Dome stuff, tracks from Wir-vien followed by Our Swimmer, a few tracks from Document & Eyewitness and The Drill to lead into the interval. Interval. Part 2: Wire play 154 from start to finish. (Wilson played Pet Sounds!). Wire then play selected highlights from Chairs Missing and Pinkflag, ending with 'Mary is a Dyke' (wilson played Barbara-Ann) Thats what I call a comeback gig! If I missed a Pliers thread while I was trying to skip the name-calling, I'm going to be very sad. So, er, I finally picked up a cheap copy of the Menswear album. I was always in the camp that if they wanted to rip off Wire they were welcome to it; I *liked* "Daydreamer". But the rest is baaaaad Blur imitation... quite a disappointment, even for someone only expecting a little more of a guilty pleasure. a ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 19:59:50 -0800 (PST) From: Santa Cruzer Subject: [idealcopy] My cup runneth over!! Mostly ON Topic!! I was up in SF last week to see the Trey Gunn Band at Cafe Du Nord, plus their instore show at Amoeba Records on Haight St. So while the band played on, I took a quick look at the Wire section and found enough solo Wire to keep me going for ages! I finally found a reasonably priced copy of Dome 3/4 (still prefer Yclept, though!) and a huge collection of Mr Gilbert's work including 'In Esse', 'Music for Fruit', 'Insiding' and '...Shivering Man'!! I have never seen so much of his work in one place before! Also was a few Newman, He Says and 6-7 Wire albums to boot!! *Phew* Nice to see that Amoeba rep-resents our favorite gang!! Pretty cool!!
