Despite the fact that that Morrisey was such a strong front-man. Pop history is littered with great bands and their not so great solo work. Wire are perhaps an exception as a lot of the solo stuff is required listening and is a large part of what 'Wire' is/was. Dome for example I see not so much as a solo project but as the mad uncle of Wire! The Smiths must have among the worst solo collection of any band. Marr has done some real dross, and every week I read in the Manchester Evening News of a new band, usually called something like 'Megarider' or 'Steamer' that features Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce and some random Liam Gallagher-clone on vocals. The Smiths were great because you could hear the tension between Morrisey and Marr and while they each applied equal force to the tug-o-war between Cilla Black (Mozzer) and the Rolling Stones (Marr)...it sounded great. And like all great bands you realise the important bits when they aren't there anymore. Andy Rourke made the bass guitar *sing* on those early Smiths records! I loved the Smiths and of course I love Vini Reilly and Durutti Column. Doesn't everyone? But I don't like Viva Hate or any of Mozzers solo products. I was a huge fan of the Smiths when Viva Hate came out. I bought the record with great anticipation. I found it a pale, washed out version of the Smiths. Depressing for all the wrong reasons. 'Every Day is Like Sunday' sums that record up. A self parody. Pantomime Smiths. Awful! For me...the joke ceased to be funny any more! ________________________________________________________________ Will should win. Gareth will win.
