Don't y'all be too hard on the Cabs for "Keep On". The 7" mixes were done by Phil Harding & Ian Curnow who were well known at the time as 'hit' mixers (on the same lines as the Beatmasters). I would have thought this would have been commissioned by EMI rather than the band. Phil Harding also did some sterling work with Nitzer Ebb so he's worth more than you might think. I first got into Wire when 'Chairs Missing' was released. I'd heard some stuff prior to that but in the summer of 1978 I taped the opening 3 tracks off Peel - and I was hooked. Well they are a great three tracks aren't they and it really is a great album. I bought other stuff by Wire but I suppose it was in the years when they had supposedly split up that I REALLY got into them - and Colins 'A-Z' and 'Not To' as well. I reckon their later stuff is great too - particularly 'A Bell is a Cup' which is still one of my all-time fave LP's. I never got to see Wire and after their Wir period I thought the chance had passed me by. So I couldn't believe it when I saw an ad for their RFH gig a couple of years ago. I don't know how many of you were there, but if you weren't ignore the reviews - - they were stunning. Admittedly, the build up - films, dj's (of sorts) and a patchy He Said set was self-indulgence gone mad (though the film of them playing in 1978 was excellent) and I have to admit that for the first time I started to have doubts as to whether Wire in 2000 would be any good. I needn't have worried about them shattering any illusions, because once the lights came back on and Wire launched into 'Pink Flag' all was forgiven. They were stunning. They were so tight, and I liked the fact that the material they played from their 80's incarnation was performed in the more straightforward style of their earlier stuff. I know this sounds a bit pathetic, but when they launched into 'Lowdown' I almost felt a sense of privilege - it just felt special moment in my life that I'd seen Wire do 'Lowdown' ! The funniest bit was near the end when - mid-'Heartbeat' - they all left the stage apart from Robert who kept the beat just about going as Michael Clarke writhed around the stage. Honestly, Michael did not dance that night - he merely writhed and crawled. After a few minutes of this, some of the audience were getting rather restless, particularly as this had basically stopped Wire's set (though I have to say I was loving it !). There was obviously a bit of Michael Clarke support behind us because a few voices then spouted up and one well-spoken voice was heard to say 'oh do shut up'. It was the most middle class heckling I've experienced at a gig ! Anyway, just as Michael Clarke stood up and we thought he was going to launch into one of his routines, he waved and left the stage. Wire came back, finished their set - with '12XU' (complete with 'Here it is...' intro) and they were gone. Incidentally, I was with two mates - one another Wire fan and the other someone who liked a lot of music from that era but had only a passing knowledge of their stuff. I thought his observation that he liked the fact that they played their old material without any sense of irony was spot on. It was a case of here it is - we know how good it is, take it or leave it. They were great - and contrary to the nme review they weren't pretentious. The build up might have been, but Wire themselves - the hilarious 'dancing' interlude aside - were an exercise in minimalism. An 'interesting' evening all round, and a brilliant performance form Wire. Can't wait for the new stuff now... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2002 07:00:37 +0100 From: "bartvandamme@home" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] seeing wire at the rfh Keith, I really enjoyed reading your review! Also a piece by Fennesz sounded not much better!
