GREAT! [Underworld, Cocteau's, Bowie, >NIN...] Is it a bootleg? I've never seen that before. One of my favorite stories about Aphex....around 91/92 it seemed almost everyone wanted an Aphex Twin remix as a sure-fire way of selling that second CD of their latest single. Mr James was more than willing to oblige..easy money of course. But one day he's at home and a motorcycle courier turns up to collect a remix that has been commisioned for some indie band (The Lemonheads if I remember correctly)...Richard James has clean forgot to do the mix so rushes upstairs and grabs a reel of tape containing an track he's just made and gives him that. The record company doesn't notice that the tape contains not one single note of the original song and duly issues the 'remix' to the unsuspecting public! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Jan 2002 02:47:33 +0000 From: Tim Subject: [idealcopy] Cabaret Voltaire are the most erratic band ever? I'm pretty sure everything after the Body & Soul LP was done entirely by RHK even though Mal gets a credit. He's credited on 'The Conversation' which is my favourite 90s Cabs record but I can only hear Mr Kirk! Maybe it was just that Mal just wanted to be a popstar all along..so when he left RHK just went back to doing experimental stuff. >those house cab tracks are just god awful and >then kirk's virtual state and number of magic are >brilliant, not to mention sweet exorcist and sandoz et >al... Groovy, Laidback & Nasty wasn't so bad...Easy Life is pretty good. I think EMI sat on the record 18 months or so before it came out...the Cabs might have been hailed as House pioneers if it had come out a bit earlier! Of course the Chicago House/Detroit Techno guys cited CV as an influence anyway... It got pretty grim after that though. Didn't they get Stock, Aitken & Waterman to do a remix for 'Keep On'? >. their work must be viewed in a context like >that so younger generations can understand their >development... from the mixup era primitivism to arms >of the lord and drinking gasoline to the very recent >preIDM stuff... The Cabs probably have one of the most confusing and inconsistent discographies in music history! Can anyone think of a more confusing band? I guess if you wanted to hear a wonderful potted history of CV in a day you should listen to the following: Mix-Up The Living Legends Red Mecca Eight Crepuscule Tracks Listen Up With... Yashar (12") The Original Sound of Sheffield Code Groovy, Laidback and Nasty Percussion Force The Conversation Virtual State (Richard H Kirk) Darkness at Noon (Richard H Kirk) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 22:47:22 -0500 From: "Eric Klaver" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] Bruce G. Does being "from the street" lend music instant credibility? I grew up lower middle class. If I chose to be a concert pianist, would that discredit me? There were a few upper middle class kids in my school who played in Punk/Mod/Ska bands. Some were good, some were bad. Some were friends (despite my class), some were assholes. From the styling of the Strokes vids that I have seen they aren't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes as to their "originality". Their whole style seems very conscious (as conscious as the Pistols or any other marketed band on a major label for that matter) and they know what they are doing. Besides which, I do enjoy listening to them.
