Well never mind the ELP connection here, it's a great piece of work. Talking about pictures at an exhibition, here in the Groninger Museum there is [for the first time outside Russia] an exhibition of paintings by the "russian Rembrandt" Ilja Repin (1844-1930). Most impressive! One of his most famous works is a portrait of [a fatally ill] Mussorgsky. Check it at: http://www.auburn.edu/academic/liberal_arts/foreign/russian/art/repin-mussor gsky.html > Gymnopedies - Eric Satie The most beautiful version in my opinion is by Reinbert de Leeuw. It's slower and more intense than others I've heard... [together with Gnossiens] check at: http://www.af.lu.se/~fogwall/reinbert.html > Happy new year, AndyL Yeah, best wishes to all of you IC-ers! Ok, so i get the Cabaret Voltaire - Conform to Deform 3 cd boxset...what a piece of crap...first off, WHY the live cd?..it sucks and basically throw away as far as i'm concerned....second, WHY NOT just put out ALL the mixes/remixes/ A sides and B sides in chronological order on separate discs...OH NO! That would make too much sense...they did it all jumbled up so we would be distracted and not notice certain omissions...such as the fact that "Safety Zone" is on here but not the A side "Dream Ticket"..how stupid is that? and i don't believe for one second that these so-called "unreleased tracks" are even from the Virgin era..i bet Kirk just threw these together...i just don't understand why nobody EVER gets comilations right! Why can't people put these things in complete and chronological order?...i don't want to be subjected to an uneven listening experience...i hate these "2001 mixes" cropping up while i am in the middle of a disc that is supposed to be "Virgin Era" stuff..sigh oh well, at least one of my late gifts for Christmas was five cds from the Complete Stockhausen Series from Stockhausen-Verlag...can't wait til those arrive!!!!! any of you ICers get any get stuff for Christmas/Channukah/Ramadan/ etc? From this week's "Time Out": ... Judging by last year's timely releases, the lush 'Girls can Tell' and the later collection 'A Series of Sneaks' (both on 12XU), [Britt] Daniels [main member of Spoon] will exorcise all memory of the now-cloying stench of Christmas pud with driving basslines and the kind of post-punk reminiscences that are far enough removed not to lead to court cases but remind you exactly what you saw in those Wire records. Anyone know anything about these people? In any case, they are playing at the Borderline in London on Saturday. Wire also gets a namecheck on the opposire page, in the review of the new Soul Jazz "In the beginning there was rhythm" compilation of 80s dancestuff, although I think they are not on the record itself. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 14:34:18 -0800 From: "Paul Pietromonaco" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Britt Daniels and Spoon, anyone? > ... I saw them (Spoon, that is) opening up for Swervedriver (!) They are basically kinda Texas pop, but they do have a Wire influence. Especially since they ended their set with Wire's "Lowdown". I picked up "A Series Of Sneaks" and thought it was pretty good. I can't remember much about it right now - it didn't suck, but it wasn't super memorable either. Some of my friends *really* like these guys. By the way - the cover looks exactly like a Wire album: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1649878736/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/al bum.html/ArtistID=SPOON/ITEMID=498623 There's a review there too. They're from Austin, but I don't get why Paul felt the need to add "Texas" as an adjective there -- I don't hear a thing twangy or southern or southwestern, for that matter, in their music. Their latest, GIRLS CAN TELL, is far and away the most pop thing they've done -- very melodic, lots of Squeeze-like keyboards in the arrangements, even harmony vocals. Their previous material was a lot more Wire-y -- propulsive, controlled noise bursts, short smart songs ("Car Radio," anyone?). I like them quite a bit. The one time I saw them live, they were opening for the Loud Family in Memphis, and they were superb --everything they played was spot-on and blistering, making the album versions of their stuff pale in comparison. To make matters even better, Britt Daniels and the whole band stayed for the Loud Family's set, and Britt turned out to be a stone cold Scott Miller fan -- he got up front with the rest of us Game Theory/Loud Family fanatics, danced, sang every word of every song (and Scott's songs have a *lot* of words), and requested (and got) "Like a Girl Jesus." Oh, and Britt plays the most heavily modified and effects-laden *acoustic* guitar that I've ever seen. Anyway, you should go see them. I regret that they snuck through Nashville this year without me knowing about it in time. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 15:29:08 -0800 (PST) From: Santa Cruzer Subject: [idealcopy] my first music of the new year! My presents to myself were: KMFDM - Beat X Beat X Beat DVD King Crimson - Level Five Syvian/Fripp - Damage And I can't say anything bad about any of them, with the exception of the KMFDM disk, which came with absolutely NO liner notes at all. Also, is anyone familiar with Kruder Dorfmeister? A friend was playing "The K&D Sessions" at a party and my sweetie and I can't stop playing it now! Is it a representative album for them? Or pretty typical? I got's ta know! RJH (No longer living in Felton!)
