In a somewhat related move, I came in the middle of a spot on NPR the other day where two guys from Australia, I believe, have released a cd that features the sound of every possible Aus telephone number combination being dialed. Since their cd is copyrighted, they are (somewhat toungue in cheek) claiming that anyone dialing the numbers owes them a license fee for the public broadcast of their composition! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 11:44:46 EST From: MrSodium@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] 10 for the ages My ten favorite acquisitions in 01: Very little from 01-- Please help-- I'm hopelessly out of touch with the latest trends. 1. Twilight Circus Dub Sound System: "Horsie." (1999) Ryan Moore of LPD applies classic dub techniques to a variety of palettes. 2. Radio Tarifa: "Rumba Angelina." (1993) Tarifa is at the southernmost point of Spain, close enough to hear the morning prayers from across the strait in Morocco. 3. Piano Magic: "Seasonally Affected" (2001) Picked up on them from the Durutti list. No pianos were harmed in the making of this record. 4. Boredoms: Rebore (vols. 1 and 2) (2000). Come on feel the noise. 5. Triumph 2000: "Phased and Confused" (1999) Richard Formby obviously gets better smack than Pete Kember. Although the catalog number (MDMA04) suggests inspiration from a different kitchen. 6. Hybrid: "Wide Angle:" (1999 Asian version with live cd but no Chrissie) In which the Russian Federal Orchestra gets down inna breakbeat style. 7. Russell Mills: "Undark" (2000) You must be able to look past the denomination of Robin Guthrie as "sonic architect." 8. LaBradford: "Mi Media Naranja" (1997) Just lovely. 9. Stars of the Lid/Jon McCaffrey: "per aspera ad astra." (2000) The sound of paint drying. 10. Nick Drake "Pink Moon:" (1970) Arright, I admit it. I really liked the VW ad and tracked down the music (Did the same wif Fluke, if anyone cares--VW's ad agency has it goin' on). Directness and restraint are timeless. np: Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi trio ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 12:13:34 EST From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] 10 for the ages In a message dated 12/10/01 10:50:19 AM Central Standard Time, MrSodium@aol.com writes: << 7. I love ol' Robin....have you heard any of the Violet Indiana stuff?...I'd rate Robin as one of my favorite "guitarists" right up there with: Vini Reilly, Christian Fennesz, Snakefinger, and Johnny Marr Robert Lynn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 15:50:14 -0800 (PST) From: BillyD Subject: [idealcopy] OT: Cabaret Voltaire Has anyone picked up the Cabaret Voltaire box set yet? Their project is called Magnus Opus (sic). Their web page, www.magnusopus.com, used to have a feature where you could enter your phone number and it would tell you which composition of theirs you were pirating. They had a composition for every possible international phone number, not just Australian ones. Unfortunately, their web page is now under construction again. ===== Andrew Westmeyer anw7pima@yahoo.com Send your FREE holiday greetings online! http://greetings.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 21:45:41 -0600 From: "Steve Loubert" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Don't answer that phone! I found them at www.magnus-opus.com In the US, we have 10 digit phone numbers. That's 10 billion possible phone numbers. A CD can hold 80 minutes, or 4800 seconds, of sound. Let's say you're really fast and can dial ten phone numbers a second. That's still only 48000 phone numbers on a CD. Even if you can program your computer to dial 100 times faster than that, it's 4.8 million numbers, which is less than 1/2000 of 10 billion. So I'd say they're not putting them all on one CD. It looks like they will sell you a CD with your phone number on it, along with a musical score and the permanent copyright license to the "composition". - ----- Original Message ----- From: Andrew Westmeyer To: Sent: Monday, December 10, 2001 7:09 PM Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Don't answer that phone! > --- MrSodium@aol.com wrote: > > In a somewhat related move, I came in the middle of a spot on NPR the > > other day where two guys from Australia, I believe, have released a > > cd that features the sound of every possible Aus telephone number > > combination being dialed. > > Their project is called Magnus Opus (sic).
