Sounds like a cool job to me Robert! To me old cemeteries are places of serenity and beauty - nothing gloomy about it. Together with my girlfriend I visited lots of them in Holland here and visiting Brittain. Being somewhat of a photographer I've got quite a collection now of statues en gravestones. Are you photographing the cemeteries you visit? My absolute favourite one was at Culbone Church near Porlock [Exmoor] http://www.english.uga.edu/232/stc/culbone1.htm http://www.apgate.com/exmoor/map.htm Only to be visited on foot - very nice walk through the forest with view on the Bristol Channel. In mediterranean countries people use little photographs on the gravestones. Nice to see these cultural differences everywhere. I'd never seen the Fall before, so I can't give you a sense for how these shows fit into the overall "Grand Picture of The Fall", but I was pretty impressed. They played a wide selection of stuff - including songs from the Unutterable. I recognized a few old songs in there, but I'm not the biggest Fall expert, so I'll refrain from trying to identify songs, with a couple of exceptions. The Crocodile Cafe is a small club. The Fall didn't sell out the place, but they did fill it comfortably. I noticed a couple of minor Seattle rock celebrities in the audience - Steve Mack from That Petrol Emotion, and Jon Auer of the Posies. Charmed Snakes (?) and Kinski opened. Charmed Snakes ought to be paying royalties to Mark E. Smith for their entire setlist. Ordered dinner while they were playing. Kinski is a local instrumental band - maybe some Can influence in there. Fairly entertaining, but after about half an hour of that, I was getting impatient for the Fall. The Fall finally went on about 15 minutes after they were supposed to, but that isn't bad for a small club, I guess. The band - bass, drum, guitar - came out first, and started playing. Mark E. Smith didn't appear until he *absolutely* had to. He was dressed rather well - looks like he's been putting some time into his appearance. However, Mark himself looks pretty haggard. Time has definitely taken its toll on Mr. Smith. The contrast was especially apparent with the relatively young band behind him. Mark was in fine voice (if you know what I mean.) He looked like he'd "had a few", but wasn't falling down drunk or anything. About right for a nightclub appearance. They had two nice, new microphones on stage for Mark. He noticed this and said "(mumble) nice new microphones". The only other really intelligible comment from Mark was "This is the sound you get when you hire good instruments". ("Hire" being the American meaning of "Rental", I believe) The band rocked very hard, and Mark seemed pretty focused throughout the set. After about 40 minutes, Mark looked at us, and quickly said "we'll be back in 5 minutes", then left the stage. The band dutifully followed. They did come back in 5 minutes, however, and finished off the set quite well. Mark did do some unorthodox things whilst performing. The microphone and microphone stand was a continuous source of facination for Mark. Mic up, mic down, mic in the stand, mic in hand, stand over here, stand over there. (You get the idea). He was also continually messing around with the volume of the bass and guitar on stage. He would turn their volume up while the song was playing. At one point, Mark was reading some pretty elaborate poetry. He reached over and just shut the guitar off completely. The guitarist looked around puzzled, spotted Mark, and just kept playing. At the appropriate moment, Mark switched the guitarist back on, and the song finished normally. We got two encores. The final encore was "I am Damo Suzuki". Mark turned the bass up for that one. Then, in the only display of Microphone abuse that evening, Mark put his main mic in the kick drum (!) and took the second mic and handed it to the audience. Whereupon, he left the stage. The band continued playing, and a female fan finished the song! Then, the house lights came up and the show was done. No set list on the floor to pick up that I could see. In conclusion, if you get a chance to see them on this West Coast US tour, I think you should go. Expect a lot of songs from the Unutterable, and probably the new album (which I don't have yet) with a few old songs sprinkled in. Well worth seeing. The closest thing to what you want is SonicFoundry Acid, available only for the PC. Rebirth is a very friendly easy to use program, but it's quite limited to 2 drum machines and 2 oscillators. Pro-Tools & Cubase are indeed for the more accomplished musicians/engineers - I would generalise and say that Cubase fits the more musically inclined while Pro-Tools is built in a more sound-engineering logic. I would still suggest that you begin with Pro-Tools, it being such a good program and gives you the capabilities of audio editing, audio manipulating and mixing in one tool. on 11/22/01 8:14 PM, Eardrumbuz@aol.com at Eardrumbuz@aol.com wrote: > i know pro-tools is $$$ (like $1000, > right?). Pro-Tools is a combination between Digidesign's hardware, a sound card, to the software itself. The Digi 001, what Colin & Malka use at swim, costs $1000 and includes the hardware, software, plus an extension with 8 inputs & 8 outputs. A cheaper version, not including the extension but only the card and the program, costs half as much and even less if you can get it 2nd hand (I'm gonna buy one of those for $300-350 - a real bargain). However, Digidesign released a free version of the Pro-Tools software, limited to only 8 tracks audio, but has almost all of the capabilities of the hardware supported version. You can find it under Pro-Tools free in www.digidesign.com. My friend Don who accompanied me to the 'Croc' had seen the band the night before in SF at the Great American said they played the same set albeit on a larger stage in a much larger venue (KSFU hyped the show all week so the was a large young crowd) MES fiddled with the equipement there too (in myFall gig experience he's always had toomuch mic fun) My amigo said the kid he handed the mic to in SF kept the band on for about 5 minutes with some more than adequate yodelling! As Fall shows go it was swell. Mark had an ocasional flutter w/ the faux choppers but was very cool and the band was hard. Worthy experince! Hey Paul, I thought Ch.. They played fairly close to where I live (about 30 mins drive) in a shitty commuter town called Aldershot, about an hour by train from London. Only about 200 people there (the venue was the local 1970s-built theatre, which is more like a small sports hall with a stage. Dave Lee Travis starred in pantomime there in 1976). Not a rock'n'roll town, Aldershot. As a result I was able to get closer to MES than for many a year (this was about the 25th time I've seen the Fall, including gigs in four separate decades, fact fans) - and yes, Marky looks bloody rough. That's what a diet of bitter, scotch and blueys does for your complexion. Seemed to be having trouble with his false teeth, though he still sounded good. He kept messing around with the microphones, sometimes using two at once, and usually dragging a heap of wires and microphone stands around the stage with him. And turning up the guitarists' and bassist's puny amps at random. The entire band has been changed since I last saw the Fall, at the Royal Festival Hall last November. Perhaps twice. The new "lads-ah" were under strict instructions to keep playing, whatever happened. He seemed none too impressed with the pitiful turnout and kept buggering off half way through songs. Band kept playing. At one stage (the titanic Dr Buck's Letter, quite the best Fall song in the best part of a decade) he sent a roadie on to do the vocals before returning to finish it off. With his coat on. Got a couple of oldies - And Therein, F-oldin' money, Mr Pharmacist - but sadly no Damo Suzuki. Then again, Aldershot didn't get two encores. Not sure we got any, such was the disjointed nature of the gig. Played only three Unutterable sonds - Dr Buck, Cyber Insect and Two Librans (the three best tracks on it). Most of the rest was either new album or even newer than new album. The new album (Are you are missing winner?) was on sale at the gig - a good month before the official release date. It's a complete departure from The Unutterable (which is superb apart from Hands up Billy, the worst Fall song ever, bar none.) Much rawer sounding - sounds like it was made in an afternoon - and probably the hardest-edged Fall album of all. Contains one absolute classic (My ex-classmates' kids) which got a thumbs-up from our Colin on his recent digital radio show thing - and, inexplicably, not one but two versions of R Dean Taylor's Gotta see Jane (the second R Dean Taylor cover the Fall have done - There's a Ghost in My house was covered in the Brix era). That only leaves Indiana wants me, which I expect to see on the Fall's 79th album in around 2015.
