Yes, OS X is still relatively new, and for older applications written for OS 9.x, it runs a shell of the old OS 9, quite an awkward solution, I think, and does not apply to hardware. If you're doing professional multimedia work on your Mac, check in advance if the hardware & software that you use support OS X. I'm still waiting for the OS X version for my soundcard before I can install it (but I don't complain - OS 9.1 is still a great OS, much better than anything Microsoft released). cheers, giluz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 14:36:09 +0100 From: "bartvandamme@home" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] CD-Rs and The Wire Page > I'm seriously worried I may be the oldest one here - 46. Mark Bursa wrote >Personally I've been compelled to listen to more "old" rather than "new" >music of late due to the poor general standard of new material, >notwithstanding the occasional excellent recommendations here. Well as one of the younger viewers I do try and feed the list new stuff when I think other listees might like it so... Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance. One of the few artists that both myself and Graeme Rowland like. I think Graeme likes his earlier less accessible works. He might not be too keen on this wonderful, intellegent pop record which reminds me a bit of Brian Eno's early stuff/Bowie's Berlin era/Stereolab/Beach Boys/Nick Drake but really sounds like nothing else around...other than (sometime Sonic Youth member/electro-acoustic composer/noise merchant/producer/brilliant pop song arranger) Jim O' Rourke. Certainly If you liked Jim's last album 'Eureka' you'll like this. 'Therefore I Am' has a guitar riff that would not be out of place on an early Wire record....till it breaks into an early 70s Beach Boys harmony part. Its that kind of record. tailor made for yours truly! Rhythm & Sound - Rhythm & Sound. A few of you Adrian Sherwood fans out there might dig this. Its very heavy, very minimal, computer-generated dub music. Speaker shaking bass, metronomic beats, and little evolving melodies that go chink-chink-chink. Micro-dub you might say. I love this. They have this thing about using tape-hiss as another instrument. I get really annoyed by music bores who are obsessed with 'signal to noise ratio' and all that crap....you know the kind of people who think Dark Side of the Moon is 'technically a great record' . Technically this record is really messy! There is hiss all the way through this record but its looped and processed and makes the thing sound really...alive! All the tracks are subtle variations on the same thing, but thats the point really. v/a - The Cosmic Forces of MU A handy overview of where electronic music is at in 2001 from Mike Paradinas (aka u-ziq) record label. Swim team was a single LP for #5, this is a double for #10. Like the Swim comps this is very eclectic as well. It ranges from premier league electronica by Jega, Capital K and U-ziq, to really monstrous weapons grade techno from Venetian Snares, to pastoral acoustic whimsy from Dykehouse, to weird cut&shut remix of MC Hammer's 'Can't touch this' by the wonderfully named Rude Ass Tinker and a frankly hilarious Kid-606 style medley of dodgy early 90s hip-house. Age, success, > marriage, and children tend to take the edge off of such things. I know this > from personal experience, other than the success part. As soon as David > Byrne sold a few million lps, married a supermodel, and had kids, the songs > got limp. That's why I'm so amazed with Tom Waits career. Starting out as a beatnick crooner [lotsa strings there] and now making this incredible edgy lofi blues he seems to have the usual career in reverse! Quitting drinking and marrying the woman of his life didn't make him a boring old fart. How about 3 cheers for uncle Tom here...
