Michael Flaherty >Graeme was issued a yellow > >card, not a red. But instead, he chose to leave the match. > >Does that surprise you? Not me. I don't want to stir this up any more but, sorry Miles, Ive just gotta throw in my thang. I've no intention of begging anyone to come back to the list. They chose to sub-off. So let 'em! Mileta? Nice guy but he needed to learn to *edit*! My posts may be rambling nonsense but they often go through hours of pruning and refinement before they get to this state. You should read the stuff I don't post! Or maybe not! But Mr Rowland? What can you say! I rarely saw eye to eye with GR, but I'll miss his posts. He was provocative, always interesting, often amusingly contradictory and in my opinion....often barking mad! But quite honestly if Graeme feels he can't post within the confines of the very relaxed set of rules, then (to paraprhase J Lydon) thats his tough shit! Lets not idolise the lad! He's just a dude in an anorak, with a rented room in Whalley Range, a vast collection of outsider music, his own fanzine/website, and an opinion on everything! If he's guilty of anything its that he doesn't listen to *people* as much as he does to music.....and if you meet him you'll know what I mean. (Get him drunk however, and he does however do a wicked impersonation of Mark E Smith.) Anyway, what I'm trying to say is stop mourning the loss of Graeme, and for gods sake don't do what Michael has done and threaten to leave the list. If you don't like the way the discussion is going....*Start a new, more intersting topic*. So Graeme is gone. There are probably lots of interesting people on this list who don't speak up.....Well come on! Nows yer chance! And what was so great about Graeme anyway? Check this out: OK folks. Imagine the scenario. You've been asked to interview Colin Newman for Wireviews. The man himself is in front of you. A man who sang loads of your favourite songs, a man who fronts one the most important British bands ever. The Singing Fish himself! Swim Team Head Honcho! The Chief Bastard! Every Wire fan is hanging on every word of the interview hoping to gain some insight into what the next Wire LP might be like. You are obviously only being allowed to interview him on the premise that it is about his new website. But, like any good chat show host you hope to slip in a couple of good questions at the end about what people really wanna know. So you ask this question. "GR: Is the next Wire album likely to get a vinyl release?" Dooohhhhh!!!!!!!! p.s. Favourite D&E track? Ally in Exile. And can I also say the studio version of Our Swimmer which is on the CD version? I just did. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 20:39:00 EST From: RLynn9@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] This is not the Graeme Rowland list! very well said.....i agree that i like both fellows well enough, but this list can go on and be quite entertaining and informative with or without ANY of us....We all have opinions and tastes on music and live acts and what not...let's move on and keep communicating these things to each other...Like i have said time and time again:; i have learned about a lot of things from each and every list member...I've been turned on to some great music and even learned about such things as tea and what certain British slang terms mean!..I have had a lot of though-provoking debates and some good laughs...So for what it's worth, i'm not going anywhere...i'm staying put and seeing what the future brings..Especially with new Wire and solo projects on the horizon.....besides, it's almost time to annoy everyone with my stupid lists...Look forward to talking with all of you during the Holidays and beyond... I am stunned. This may have already been discussed but have just opened my e-mails after a weekend away to find that Michael died very suddenly. I find it all the more bizarre as yesterday I was bopping around to some live Can tapes I have, still reeling at the imagination and brilliant interplay these guys had. A truly sad loss. Here's what Holger Czukay says: "november 17 can guitarist michael karoli died unexpectedly this morning in his home while playing on his favorite instrument. in the last weeks we often had telephoned together in which he expressed how lucky he felt that our ways were crossing when he still was at school. in may 1966 i became a music teacher in the same school. and as i hadn't any professional training i gave a test lesson to that class where he was sitting as a pupil. the director told me to leave the room for a moment while he was speaking to the pupils what they were thinking of me becoming their teacher. michael told me later that he especially favored this idea which practically meant that i was earning a salary each month, my first - and last too. at that time he took some guitar lessons from me but frankly speaking i could at least learn as much from him as he could learn from me. after leaving the school we kept staying in contact roughly thinking what our future could become while working together on a piece by bix beiderbecker "in a mist" - a premonition to can's "mushroom". micki later commented this recording that it reminded him of the atmosphere in chicago during winter time and of "in a mist". last time we worked especially tight together was on can's "rite time" album from 1987 till 89 which we both produced. about a month ago we phoned each other to arrange a video interview date where we wanted to go through our common history. he suggested to wait a bit longer as it would appear to him speaking out his final testament. thinking of his young children he tried to avoid this thought as they strongly needed the father. this afternoon i tried to confirm a date, a few hours too late. michael was the most intelligent guy of us all to say the least."
