Hey all- I was pointed to the latest copy of "Vanity Fair" magazine, the music issue, and found some pretty cool stuff in it! Albeit, 70% of the issue was either ads or total crap! - - An interesting item was in the back called the Rock Snob's Dictionary, Vol 2. It included references to Townes Van Zandt, Steve Albini, Sun Ra, The Soft Boys, Neumann U47 microphones and an entry about Wire which included the following: "Gaunt Anglo-punks whose jerky 1977 debut 'Pink Flag' crammed 22 ascetic tunesinto less that 40 minutes and cemented the word 'angular' in the rock-crit lexicon..." It goes on for a bit more but I'm too lazy to type the whole thing here! Some other interesting tidbits... - - There was a cool shot of Eno and Bryan Ferry together, mentioning their separate and various achievments. Other cool photos included Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Al Green, Lee Scratch Perry and others.. - - Beck's favorite 50 album covers, which included the 1st Ramones, Richard Hell and the Voidoids 1st, and an amazing array of others. - - A nice collection of John Lennon interviews. Daydream Nation is easily my favorite Sonic youth record--and Sonic Youth is my favorite rock band for both the 80s and 90s. So ... what's so revolutionary about it? Nothing, really. It's the album where the Branca influence started showing more, perhaps. That went away in the early 90s, but from Washing Machine on has been more pronounced than ever. 2. Recommending solo Bruce to someone who primarily listens to 80s Wire is indeed a bit tricky. I hate to make any assumptions based on such a small amount of info, but I can say "if you're looking for pop, stay away." ;) Start w/ Shivering Man. If you love that, write for more recommendations. If not, skip him. Your loss. ;) Michael Flaherty (who is not ready to do a "best of the year" this early) PS For the record, I really like 80s Wire, I just have real preference for 70s, Wir, and solo B & G. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2001 16:28:14 -0500 From: "Syarzhuk Kazachenka" Subject: [idealcopy] Ex Lion Tamers Do any recordings of Ex-Lion Tamers exist? How many people have > ever had a dream about a member or members of Wire? I had one the other night - I think it's a consequence of my tendency to wade through the IC list late on. In brief I was at a Wire gig, in a very small venue, all seated, but in a 'village hall meeting' kind of way. The music was odd and very minimal, Robert providing high pitched 'ooooo' vocal effects in short repetitious bursts. Eventually Bruce left the stage and sat close by to where I was to watch the other three. He was delighted with what he heard and turned to those of us nearby and declared "the only valid response to that would be 95 with just as many syllables." I was disappointed that I had no idea what he meant. However somebody close by took him up into a discussion and the two of them moved off to a quieter spot to continue, Bruce's new friend sporting a blue t-shirt with sweat showing copiously on the back. I decided that he must be somebody from the list. Then, turning round to look at the small crowd, it occured to me that everyone at the gig was from the list, and I became concerned lest this was the extent of the Wire fan base. Incidentally, back in the real world, that other Colin Newman made it into a list of 'very rich people' in the Sunday Times last week. And in the same edition, an advert for an oven or something with the slogan 'Ikon/I Can'. If anyone stumbles upon any reviews of it, please share them here. Hi Giluz! Here's one from 'Future Music' which is one of those rather sad gear-fetish mags for musicians with more money than talent. Full of expensive keyboards and samplers (that will cost you a months wages) that contain loads of of pre-set sounds that allow you to re-create records already made by Fatboy Slim or Leftfield. Hmmm. (I only bought it for the FSOL interview, and I like to listen to the readers demoes to satisfy myself that I can do better than all the technophiles with my held-together-with-sellotape PC, my Boss Dr Sample and me battered Vox Standard Dugga Machine ) Anyway, from page 92, heres the Swim review, not very good as it 'appens: "As you'll have guessed from the #2 part of the title, this is the second taster of what Swim's artists have to offer, and there's certainly a wide variety, from the rock of Silo to the programmed dub of Lobe, from the delicate melodies of Toucaen to the retro sound of Colin Newman (and yes, it does sound a bit like Numan, in more ways than one). On the whole, the 19 tracks here are too diverse to hang together as a good compilation, so you're better off listening to it on HMV headphones and picking which artist you prefer. The best tracks here are from Symptoms (aka Klaus Ammitzboll): Nordic ambient at its very best." Well he said nice things about Symptoms, but "The Retro Sound of Colin Newman"?!?! If that doesn't whip a few listees up into an apoplectic rage I don't know what will. And as for the Gary Numan comparison....if I was Colin Newman I would threaten to sue for deformation of character. To my knowledge, At no point in his career has Colin sung from within a revolving neon cage, painted his face white, crashed various light aircraft, sung humourless dirges about falling in love with androids or voted Conservative. Come on Graeme, never mind spouting off letters to The Wire ...get writing to this lot. The reviewers name is Jack Hall. Which is rather apt as he does indeed know Jack 'all about music on the strength of this review. Mileta - psychoanalysis: what do you know of >> Jacques Lacan? Just been scaring some students with >> Oedipal interpretations of Hamlet. > Lacan - French psychoanalyst and multi-national wanker. In a nutshell Lacan is talking about a few stages in the development of the child. I don't remember the exact names, but he's talking about the transition between the first stage, in which the child views himself and his mother as the same entity, and the symbolic stage, the one that has to do with language and the laws of society, and this is the mirror stage. The mirror stage is when the child actually starts to recognise himself as a seperate entity and is also able to grasp that his reflection in the mirror is himself and not another child. I hope I got all that right because it's been a few years since i read this shit. Now, Lacan's theories proved successfull in psychoanalysis mostly with very rich middle aged patients that didn't have any significant psychological problems apart from being terminally bored. Regardless of this, humanities theorists quite liked Lacan (they were the only ones that could understand what he wrote anyway), and this being the age of constructionism, just before post-modernism would come and collapse everything (he-he), Lacan-based theories were very fashionable for a time, especially in film studies, where they foolishly interpreted the mirror stage, in which the mirror is just a metaphor, literally. The sad result of this was Christian Metz. So I think there's nothing better to scare students with than Lacan. I can testify for myself that I was absoultely horrifed. giluz ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2001 19:22:58 -0800 From: Paul Pietromonaco Subject: Re: [idealcopy] A Stroke o'Flux! On paper (or e-mail) it sounds really contrived and stupid, but, believe me, it was the most heartwarming thing you'd ever seen. Imagine it this way: You form a little band, playing mostly for your friends, who don't care that you really can't play your instruments, and that your lyrics are about bananas, flying jelly beans and pot scrubber cleaners. Suddenly, people start to really like you. Next thing you know, your tiny (and still pretty amateur) band is playing clubs and stadiums all over the world; Redd Kross, Nirvana and a host of other bands you admire think you're something special; and audiences who you thought would never have anything to do with you in a million years are cheering wildly for you. Now, you could either go the punk rock/Pink Floyd way, and spit upon said audience, and/or act real bored, etc. (See Strokes, etc.). Or, you could take photos of each other in front of the wild, mohawked, pogo-ing crowd because you know it would be the only time you'd probably ever be there. (And, with a rare exception, or two, that seems to be true.) Frankly, I don't mind when a band seems human and warm instead of technical and professional. (Heck - that was my band's raison-d'etre (^_^)) To be honest, that's one of the qualities I admire about Wire. Let's face it - Wire's live shows are not paragons of technical excellence. All the time I was watching them, I was thinking to myself "Hey - I could play that pretty easily". But, that's not the point. I would have never have come up with music like that myself. To me, Wire seems like artists trying to create something new and different based on the abilities they have. And, although the music is nowhere near the same, I see similar things in Shonen Knife. But, that's probably mostly just me (again. I must admit that i read few interviews Ian gave to various newspapers befor and after Evergreen and find out that he spoke same thing like always ( J.Cope, " we are greatest", Courtney try to shag me, etc, etc..). Then i lost my contact with Bunny news, get CD-R of What Are You Gonna ..and ages after that one i heard that Les wasn' t on it.. Sources inside the band ( if is to believed EATB list and people there ) claimed that WAYGDWL is in fact Ian' s album and that there was a few arguements after Evergreen. Btw, people there was in contact with Les, and like him more than Ian, hmm. You can always put music differences banner or whatever , but undoubtely some people put impressions that Les cannot get real relationship with Ian and..he left or..
