Hello everyone! Just s*bscribed to list, and this is my happy, chirpy post. Just started listening to Wire again after a long period of no play. Favorite album(s)----a toss up between IBTABA and Ideal Copy. I find that I find myself listening to the background activities of most Wire songs more closely than to what is being played on top. Ahead, In Vivo, Drill, IBTABA and German Shepherds are pretty much my fave songs. I would be open to any recommendations regarding solo projects, as I just became employed again and can buy CD's now. Nice to be on the list and read that others have the same musical tastes, (Wire and otherwise as I do). Thanks. Hold on a second Dan Bailey! Whats this all about? By 'average music hack' I was imagining some coke-addled tosspot in London writing for Q magazine or the NME and getting all excited about the innovative use of Banjos on the Travis LP. I wasn't having a pop at you or anyone else on this list...I don't know anything about you anyway! Are you an 'average music hack'?!!! Robert asked for Top 10 LPs released in 2001. I never said my taste was 'superior' to yours or anyone elses....its just *mine*! I'm sure Robert, Graeme R and Michael Flaherty's top 10s of 2001 will make mine look dreadfully conservative! God only knows why you think my music taste is somehow superior to your own! It ain't! Its just a list of what floated my boat this year! I'm not trying to score cool points here....I genuinely like all these records in my Top 10..and I've tried to explain why in my post! >(last year, the top-10 list i published in my former newspaper >ran thus -- mekons/fall/go-betweens/dandy warhols/alabama >3/mdfmk/chumbawamba/electric hellfire club/murder city devils/amy rigby ... >obviously, i'm too weak-minded to get much out of electronica or whatever >it's being called this week) because i like the strokes' album a lot I never said people who like The Strokes were weak minded!!! Lots of people on Idealcopy like The Strokes, and so do most of my friends!. I don't like The Strokes because I don't get any enjoyment from their music! It boils down to this. My fave record of the year, the Fennesz album, makes me feel giddy with pleasure, my spine tingle and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The Strokes album makes no impact on me whatsoever. It leaves me cold. It makes me feel old. Its style over content, and its all over the bloody music press and I think its crap. Its Unit-shifting radio friendly f**king shit which presses all the right UK music media buttons and has been marketed to death like a new brand of soft drink. What I need right now is real *innovation* and real *excitement*....are The Strokes really the best the young of the 21st century can do? Rip off The Velvets...again?!!! Quite liked the 5th album at the time but only The Game & Lips like Sugar really stood out (the only other tunes I can remember from it are Bedbugs & Over You). They did a much more energetic version of the Game live on Whistle Test which I recorded & played til the tape wore out. Taped Mac's Peel session (Damnation was a good song) but never bought another record after the Lips like sugar 12". I disagree about Will Sargeant getting better - I'd say his peak in terms of inventiveness & originality was his playing on Clay. The Electraxion album was awful! Unlike Wire, who not only have teeth but original members, the Bunnymen lost their drummer in a motorcycle accident. Pete de Freitas was a very inventive drummer (especially on Heaven Up Here) and maybe his absence accounts for the mediocrity they've churned out since he died. Japanese fans (including my wife) call the band Echo Bunny for short. Her favourite album is 'the best of' CD & her favourite song is Lips Like Sugar. She doesn't care for Wire.
