I thought that Levene was zonked out on smack for the duration of these recordings and used to just come and addle around with his guitar for a while and then disappear to shoot up again. Still sounds fantastic! > And whatever happened to Jeanette Lee? Worked on Snub TV last I heard with Brenda Kelly, ex-Rough Trade and editor of the Catalogue. I got 1 cd from 1997 by FMS called 'do we look like comedians?' to which the answer is yes, judging by the picture on the back of 2 dudes in white lab coats... Dudes in question are K Walsh / S Rowlands & I would describe the overall sound as a mix of electronic washes with trip-hoppy / drum 'n bassy / dubby beats + samples and some fairly tuneful vocals... Not too heavy & somehow reminiscent of Devo... I know nothing about them - just got it cheap off a stall in Goodge St. 'cos it looked interesting and I liked the name... Could do you a cd-r if you want (maybe for a swap) cheers Alistair ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 20:19:07 +0000 (GMT) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Graeme=20Rowland?= Subject: [idealcopy] I am not Damo Suzuki Giluz opined >>>>Movies is a must for any Can fan. Other Czukay albums that I like: good morning story and czukay vs. dr. walker: clash. I also like Jaki Liebezeit's Club Off Chaos albums - ever heard of them? Haven't heard Club Off Chaos, or the Dr Walker collaboration, but Czukay's Good Morning Story, Der Osten Ist Rot, Moving Pictures, On the Way to the Peak of Normal & Canaxis are all good albums which I'd recommend to Can fans as being better than the later Can albums. >>>>And Flow Motion is indeed a bad album. It was my first Can purchase and it kept me off them for a few years. I don't think it's bad, just mediocre. They did the pop thing really well on the preceding 'Landed' which is the last Can album I rate highly, although I haven't heard the reformed 'Rite Time' all the way through. The first thing I ever heard by Can must've been their minor hit 'I want More' from 'Flow Motion' on TOTP & it didn't make me curious... The same thing happened with Beefheart - after seeing footage of him performing 'Peaches' with the Tragic Band on Whistle Test, I had him mistakenly tagged as some old hippy bar blues bore for a while. I suppose if I'd only heard Eardrum Buzz & Kidney Bingos & Slow it Grows I might've dismissed Wire! I got into Can at a friend's house one inebriated evening after some gig or other when he plonked the stylus down on 'Cannibalism' and as soon as 'Father Cannot Yell' fired up I knew who The Fall had been ripping off! Therapy? also (perhaps inadvertantly) ripped off the cover on their 'Teethgrinder' single. I recorded 'Cannibalism' (which is a superbly edited compilation and a perfect introduction to the band) and borrowed 'Ege Bam Yasi' off another friend and soon bought 'Tago Mago' & 'Soundtracks'... Has anyone seen the horrendous cover of the new Fall album? They really don't give a shit do they? Mileta asked >>>>is it true that Jaz working with Dave Grohl as a producer and drummer on new album.. I have no idea. Part of that Killing Joke Last Laugh site (MP3 downloads) was inaccessible over the weekend, but if they have any news they email me. Do you mean Dave Grohl is drumming & producing Killing Joke? The last I heard about the next Killing Joke album is that Jaz wanted Raven back in the band again as Youth has amicably retired. Anyway, if Grohl was in KJ it'd certainly be a better use of his talents than that crappy MTV rawk band he fronts that sound like watered down Nirvana with everything good about them excised. He's a great drummer and a useless songwriter! Mileta - try typing 'Killing Joke' into the Google search engine (www.google.com) as there are plenty of other Killing Joke sites out there. Maybe you'll find your answer? ===== Cracked Machine irregular cyberzine http://www.webinfo.co.uk/crackedmachine "What one thinks of as extremes seldom are" :: BC Gilbert ____________________________________________________________ Nokia Game is on again. I just know the albums and they are both good. I personally prefer the first, Club Off Chaos. Clash is a double CD Czukay made with Koln DJ Dr. Walker, also released in 1998 - it's a collection of a few improvised live sets they did, and it's great (though only for the electronically inclined). A few years after I bought Flow Motion I found Cannibalism in a second hand record shop and bought it for a ridiculously low price. It took a few months for this to sink in. Soundtracks was next (a very friendly way to get into Can, if you don't want to start with Cannibalism). cheers, giluz ps. Anyone (except for Graeme) have anything to say about swim team 2? Each day a different track catches my ear (today's favourites are Colin's superb remix of Prime Movers and Bumpy's Bumpy On The Beach). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 15:58:38 -0600 From: Michael Flaherty Subject: [idealcopy] This past weekend I listened to ... ... live music by Kasper T. Toeplitz and Kawabata Makoto. I'm glad (and lucky) that they didn't play the same night! Toeplitz plays bass through a powerbook (primarily). He played two of his own works and one he co-wrote with Phill Niblock (this was only the second playing of the latter, which premired in Paris 2 weeks ago). Like Niblock, he left his audience in a stunned silence--no one made a sound until the applause at the end. If your into this kind of thing and get the chance, don't miss him. He is also a nice (and interesting guy). I was early, and he sat down and talked to me for 40 minutes ... until 5 minutes after he was suppose to start playing. Makoto played the next night at the MCA. His short solo guitar set had more of a mezmerizing quality--similar to his "You are the Moonshine" cd. The set was opened by a vocalist who had Elliot Sharp on guitar. Unfortunately, she had a Judy-Garland-Yoko-Ono thing going on (no kidding!) that made it hard to concentrate on anyone else. Again, recommended listening for the Gilbert-Ocsid set. :) Michael Flaherty ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #327 *******************************
