FSOL made electronica that goes against all the current laptop-geek rules...no glitchy, girlfriend-repellent crackly minimalism with FSOL...they made godlike slabs of multi-layered electronic psychedelia, always full of atmosphere, sex and melody. And then four wicked albums in.....they disappeared! They've been away for ages while Gary Cobain recovered from a long illness which took several years to diagnose, and was found to be caused by mercury fillings in his teeth leaking poison into his central nervous system (bloody hell!) Anyway, they are back in a pretty low key fashion, just an album of new versions of the aformentioned classic, released to little fanfare. Don't be put off by the 'remix LP' tag....its actually (original 12" version notwithstanding) a whole bunch of new recordings based on the original. FSOL have expanded their 'two blokes and a sampler' line-up to include an orchestra of session players, strings, sitars, brass, guitars. The mood is certainly a lot lighter than 'Dead Cities', but no less inventive. I hate to use the word 'Organic' but, what the hell, its a more Organic sound to what you might expect, but at the same time its definitely FSOL and the combination of sampled sounds and joyful live instrumentations works brilliantly......no-one layers sounds like they do. The tracks veer sufficiently from the blueprint of the source track as to work as new material anyway, and they still sound like no-one else on earth! A bloody nice suprise! ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #326 *******************************
