[Felton Frog-Mon Subject: [idealcopy] The Terrible Arrogance of Keith Levene >>>>Levene. More inclined to agree with Michael. Post Flowers of Romance PiL is pretty dire. Much underrated contribution is Martyn Atkins on Flowers. Discuss. Atkins also revitalised Killing Joke after they began their slide into wishy washy stadium rawk. I've been listening to a tape of 'Extremities' recently and it's way better than I remember it being. I can't recall anyone else except maybe Neil Young, who managed to follow such a turkey (Outside the Gate) with such a great record. Neil Young has made plenty of turkeys though, but Killing Joke have only really made one absolutely crap record (although Brighter Than 1000 Suns isn't amazing by any stetch). Early PiL had two very able musicicans (drums & guitar) and one fast learner with a great knack for getting repetition in the right place, plus of course the vitriol of Lydon. Like Killing Joke's best music the pure HATRED of that band was a powerful motivating force. Martin Atkins is now hated by both Levene and Jaz Coleman. I think it's fairly obvious that Levene did most of the music on 'The Flowers of Romance' and was the most visionary and musically talented member of PiL. I know if I'd made 'The Flowers of Romance' I wouldn't feel much need to try to better it. I also agree that everything PiL has done since Levene left was a pile of crap. Jah Wobble has done some good stuff but it's of a very different emotional colour. Levene's solo records might have been crap (I wouldn't know as I haven't heard them) but nothing by Pigface or the Ginger Baker / Bill Laswell / John McGeoch Pils ever struck me as much more than boring money music. And whatever happened to Jeanette Lee? As for Keith Levene's arrogance, I thought he made the fairly humble point that PiL was actually marred by his less than assertive attitude early on. He says that he regrets not stopping Wobble being so nasty to Walker that he walked and regrets letting Lydon chuck Wobble out of the band. If he claims he wrote most of the music I believe it's actually because he did! btw if anyone is in Manchester tomorrow evening then get on down to aLECTRO-eCOUSTIC at Bar Centro, Tib St where for FREE you can hear Philip Jeck & Vergil Sharkya, Kaffe Mathews & Riz Maslen (of Neotropic) & Disco Operating System. Just got back from seeing the Residents in San Francisco. Having helped put on one of their shows earlier in the tour, I was stunned how great they were tonight! There is one more show on Halloween, and if you have a chance to see it, I highly recommend it! In addition to the material being alot tighter and more powerful, they have a gamelan group open the show and then join the Rez' for the finale "Bridegroom of Blood". Cool stuff! Not much music playing right now, I just moved and haven't gotten most of my CD's out yet. Stay Ideal and keep copying!
