Whoever it was they had one LP out on Probe Plus which was withdrawn when he joined the Bunnymen. Whether Geoff has reissued it since his dismissal/departure I don't know. I seem to recall the Noel and the Bunnymen first gig getting a rave review in the NME at the time. I think they played a really small venue in Lpool. I do remember working in a record shop in Worcester when the Noel Bunnymen LP came out - still on WEA - and we didn't even sell one copy of it. WEA dropped them pdq. If he was instrumental in PIL's sound, why is he an arrogant, delusional git? He was always quick to give Wobble credit for any initial ideas he had, but I don't think there is any doubt that Levine was central to the music. My question to this >modern day genius is, where ye been Keith? Your one solo album was junk >and sounded wildly drug addled. Since then, silence. That dude needs to >get a clue. PIL was magic. With "drug addled" you may well have answered your own question. But even if drugs had nothing to do with it, Levine would hardly be the first artist to peek early, never returning to that early glory. In "rock" music I'd go as far as to say it's typical. I like some post-Levine Lydon, but certainly it was his peek as well. I have two ep's by him that I haven't played in a decade: "Violent Opposition"" and "2001-Back to Black" Iwas severely let down by these, but what exactly are they? Does anyone know the chronological story? Lastly, when I first heard "I will follow" by U2, I thought the guitar was a rip-off of the song Public Image. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 12:45:49 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: levine << Lastly, when I first heard "I will follow" by U2, I thought the guitar was a rip-off of the song Public Image. >> Not as good a Public Image rip-off as 'The Lebanon' by the Human League! Whilst ST didn't do much for me, one of my favourite Banshees tracks is 'An Execution' (probably their last really great one). Voices, Red Over White and Slap Dash Snap are also some of their best. Slap Dash Snap (from the Spellbound 12") is particularly impressive - recorded in 1981 with a drum machine that approaches a kind of early glitch/jungle type rhythm. Has anyone managed to check if Arabian Knights UK 12" was extended? Spellbound is, but it doesn't say so on the sleeve, and the extended mix is slightly better than the album version. And has anyone heard any of Steve Severin's recordings since the Banshees split? Any good? For Kraftwerk, I'd start with Radioactivity and work backwards and forwards alternately. The Mix is pretty awful and Electric Cafe isn't up to much either... It's also worth getting a German version of 'Man Machine' as The Model sounds better sung in German. Kraftwerk were of course an influence on Wire, and one of the punk bands that Colin liked early on was the Banshees, who were also influenced by Kraftwerk. Fortunatelly, i start Kraftwerk with Radio-Activity in time when i discover kraut-rock and get secondhand copy of that ( yugoslav pressing, if case that i woned now, maybe will have some significance for some hard-core Kraftwerk fans). Model was hit and we are all waiting for Man Machine, which was good also.. Aftre that, i like them of course, but never was for me what they closing with Man Machine.. > > Kraftwerk were of course an influence on Wire, and one > of the punk bands that Colin liked early on was the > Banshees, who were also influenced by Kraftwerk. as a people who was influenced from Kraftwerk, i was very unpatiently to hear second Electronic album, where we was forced to expected some mix of starry duo with some teutonic repetition, but it just failed.. i was very, very dissapointed.. btw, does anyone know where could be available vinyl of Thorn EP by Banshees.. even if don' t owned gramophone i will be happy to get back in my collection.. in fact i adore that Overground version from Thorn.. mileta ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #323 *******************************
