>>>You're going to have serious problems when these
new CD's hit the market in a big way - the ones with
the new spoiler software, which will stop CD tracks
being turned into MP3s, and will prevent copying of
CD's on a PC!<<<
This really annoys me. Almost all of the MP3s on my
Mac at home are from *legal* CDs I own. Those that
aren't come from deleted ones that I'm still hunting
for.
Mind you, said 'protection' doesn't actually work on
the Mac at the moment, so I'm okay for now :)
Well, as far as I am aware, the new spoiler software is embedded into each
track and causes a nasty hissing noise when copied. The article I read
didn't mention any distinction between PC and MAC.
Apparently though, there is one Country and Western CD been released which
has the spoiler on it, but, when you buy the CD, it comes with a
registration form which, once you've registered as the owner, enables you to
go to a web site and download the MP3 files for all the tracks. Maybe there
is something in those which would enable the company to track back to anyone
making illegal copies.

I have "Grinning Cat", and wouldn't describe it as housey or ambient. After
several listenings, it's failed to make an impression on me.

Subject: [idealcopy] OT - Stereolab question
Hey all-
Having only listened to one Stereolab album, which I
really didn't like, I have been interested in how
often they pop up on this list. That said, they are
scheduled to play a couple of shows at the Fillmore in
SF and I wanted to see if any ICers had comments about
their live shows.
Thanks,
Stay ideal!

saw them at the 2nd Phoenix festival in the UK, 92? 93?
and then in Liverpool in about 95/96 with Yo La Tengo...
anyway, both times they were positively uplifting, but they are probably a
very different band now.
still, i'd say go and see them, according to reports of the new lp, they
have stripped the instrumentation back down, which can only be a good thing
IMO.

yeah, i really can't help but still love the stuff i used to listen to as a
kid...deeply uncool in certain quarters, but, fuck it...
my 11 year old son wants an electric guitar for Christmas. he loves Papa
Roach, Limp Bizkit, Blink 182, Linkin Park, System Of A Down....
he even wants a copy of the last Slipknot lp now...almost makes me wish i
hadn't brainwashed him with The Ramones when he was 2 or 3!!!

you could describe their live shows as lo-fi too, very stripped down, no
fancy lights (unless you count that one time i saw them and they had one of
those lcd thingies with the words that go by)...still a fascinating live
band, and i'll second what ian said "very uplifting"...and last year's show
in ny featured a long jam with jim gastr del rourke at the end

Truely spoken like a child of '63 Mileta! For a while there you took me
back. [boohoooo]
Slade was my absolute fav in those days, but I remember [I remember...] the
Who's "Won't get fooled again" to be my first single, soon followed by Pink
Floyd's "Arnold Layne". Alice Cooper was also fascinating, but I guess I
found him [together with Bowie in those days] a bit frightening. And of
course Roxy was great in those days!
A few years later I too was really into Tangerine Dream.
Indeed punk changed everything! My first punk-single was the Damned's "New
Rose" [Bowie & Iggy really liked it too, I heard]
I'm really curious about other IdealCopiers first punk singles...

My first album was "Slade Alive" .. must have been in 1972 if I
remember correctly ... this was the album with the VERY LOUD
belch during a rather quiet part of a song.
Slade were my favourite group during this time when the three
most successfull bands were Sweet, T.Rex and Slade in Germany.
The next albums I bought were Ten Years After, Moody Blues and
America's "Homecoming". Of these four groups I still listen
to America's songs now and then ...
And from this period to my first contact with Wire (as early
as the Pink Flag release) there was a long way to go.
