He does do a good Geordie accent on the opening of (I think) `Sick and tired on a diet of too much'. Incidentally, Eno does a good impression of Brian Ferry on 'Dead finks don't talk' (on Here come the warm jets). Worth hearing. IMO HALO and HOX are bloody good albums and I'd urge them on anyone who hasn't picked them up yet. I think I've mentioned before that I believe Primal Scream may have been listening to HALO before they recorded XTRMNTR. Graeme described them as dishonest in a recent post and I agree - a band who completely bear the imprint of whichever musical style last sat on them. And not comfortable with criticism either, it would seem. They (or their publicist) once tried to prevent Caroline Sullivan doing a live review of them in the Guardian after she trashed one of their albums - she responded with a gig report of their audience holding up pairs of socks during the ludicrous `get your rocks off..' Nice one. The first release: The Buffalo Springfield box set. (If you have no interest in historical archives, skip to the next release.) This is a magnificent set. Four disc, HDCD mastered, transferred lovingly from a wealth of tapes, many of which were kept by Neil Young himself. Mostly mono mixes, but that's okay since the stereo mixes were usually done outside of the band's control. The fourth disc is the complete Buffalo Springfield (mono) and Buffalo Springfield Again (stereo) albums. If this is a preview of what Neil's been doing for his long-awaited Box sets, we're in for some seriously cool archival material. The second release: Tori Amos - Strange Little Girls This is one of the oddest mainstream releases you'll hear this year. The entire album is cover versions of songs by men. She picks her hits well - there are covers of songs by the Stranglers (Strange Little Girls), Lloyd Cole & The Commotions (Rattlesnakes), and Joe Jackson (Real Men) that are pretty straightforward renditions - for Tori, anyway. Then, you get Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" sung to what sounds like the backing track of "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog", '97 Bonnie & Clyde by Eminem (!) as a whispered poem, Slayer's "Raining Blood" as a soft piano ballad, or the dub (!) version of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun". For her fans, this CD is probably a revelation. For everyone else, it might provoke some head-scratching. For Tori, it was probably something to do while she's busy with her new kid. (^_^) As a bonus, there's four different covers, and inside the CD are pictures of Tori as different characters performing each of the 12 songs. I can hardly wait to see her on tour - should be odd, to say the least. (Needless to say, I got my tickets already). Actually I think I'd rather have a DVD comp. of the Rock Family Trees series that Paul from Bury mentioned. That was a great series! It traced the line-up changes and spin-off bands from a particular group as detailed in Pete Frames famous drawings. John Peel did the witty commentary, and they usually picked bands with very entertaining histories....Black Sabbath, Deep Purple...The Banshees, the Liverpool Erics scene (Big in Japan/Bunnymen/Teardrops/OMD/KLF etc etc) And of course Fleetwood Mac.....bloody awful band but what a story!!! Tailor made for such a series! I'd also like a comp of the best bits of Snub TV and The Tube. I know there are a couple of Snub videos but these are long deleted....you could make a really good anthology of late 80s'/early90s stuff from that show. KLF, Dinosaur JR, Spacemen 3, MBV, Wire!, Pixies etc etc.... The Tube? Well the clip of XTC performing on 'The Meeting Place' on the set of The Prisoner got me into both that series and XTC....and there is a whole treasure trove of great telly dying to be compiled...(albeit alongside a whole bunch of badly dressed 80s crap involving Paula Yates, INXS, Terrence Trent Derby, Tina Turner and Phil Collins) _________________________ The Kids Are Alright http://www.kidsindestructible.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 22:38:14 -0500 From: "David McKenzie" Subject: [idealcopy] Re: this week i listened to: super post electronica - phase one real nice compilation of japanese electronic music commonly found in used bins around chaicago really nice - i have never heard of any of these artists in any other context jane siberry - when i was a boy heiress apparent to joni mitchell's throne beautiful songs of love an loss which still bring a tear spiritualized - ladies and gentlemen yep - it *is* pretty lane - the first number is pretty strong, but it's down the tube pretty fast from there now located on my 'outgoing' pile ran blake - the short life of barbara monk blake's understated approach makes me com back to his recordings over and over his 'film noir' is a lost masterpiece which really needs to find it's way to reissue (funny how little of the great artista jazz and arista freedom stuff has made it to cd) Ru.electronic nice compilataion of russian analogue bubblebaths lo recordings is a british national treasure for their odd releases the collaborations were unlikely and strangly wonderful this release sits nicely by SPE Phase One Robert Rutman - Music to Sleep BY drones played on the "Bow Chime" and "Steel Cello" David Grubbs - Thirty-Munute Raven not sure 'bout this one Grubbs' post Gastr releases have consistantly delighted me with thir whimsy and light touch this one might be a tad lighter a few more listens are definately in order various - suck it and see P-EEUW! - I just do not get the howie b. thing even the name sounds like a minor character in The Graduate down-tempo - down tools another one for the 'outgoing' pile tons of schematic, merck and other odd idm label downloads from eMusic as well as more Bill Evans than I will ever absorb (the complete riverside recordings (12 discs) and the last waltz set (8 more)) from eMusic as well plus Monk and Cecil Taylor d/l's and...some lizzy mercier descloux demos with minu cinellu (any other lizzy fans?) tdluuu d ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 22:11:20 -0700 From: "Prince Of Happiness" Subject: [idealcopy] Re: idealcopy-digest V4 #289 Past 15 years?
