Well, as much as I like the first 3 Ultravox albums, I do think they got 1 1/2 decent albums out with Ure out front. In fact, I think I listen to Vienna as much as the 1st one. Just a thought... RJH (who will admit to liking the Bangles way back when...although that medley sounds nasty! __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help? Do you judge art by the artist or by the art itself? charles >> ooo - that's a tough call, isn't it? - as much as an artist's work is subjective to what they're feeling/thinking/seeing/experiencing, isn't our viewing just as subjective? - if we were Vulcan, we might be able to get around it but wouldn't that take something away from the art to look at it strictly in a technical aspect? no, art needs emotion and it doesn't matter if it's deep emotion or not, just so long as it moves you in some way - hhhmmm, I have to say my attitude to a work is subjective to, and sometimes, dependent on, what I'm feeling/thinking/seeing/experiencing at that time and that could be influenced by how I feel about the artist personally - not so much class, as action once they're an adult and have free will to make their own choices - I don't like the choices they make in life or what kind of person they are, chances are I won't give their art a chance regardless of what everyone else seems to think about it - but I CAN be totally objective when I know nothing about the artist, or don't have any strong feelings about them either way - and I must admit that I'd be more likely to go the extra mile to understand, accept, and appreciate art from someone I respect/like as person - so I guess I'd say it's a bit of all for me I don't think class makes a difference in whether it's "great" art or not - it does follow that if you have nothing to lose you don't care if you lose it so a certain boldness might be reflected in your work - and there is a factor to having to scratch and claw your way through life that can create some gut wrenching art - but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "great" art - on the other hand, people who are secure can afford to be bold as well, so "having" can give you the space to take chances in your work - it might also make you not willing to take risks on losing what you've got so your art might be more subdued, mainstream, whatever - but rich people can feel just as deeply as poor people, maybe about different issues in different ways, but it doesn't preclude them from having strong emotions they can use in art hunger - not sure - some artists create only because they love to create and don't really care if anyone else likes it or wants it - some artists have an overt hunger to have their work out there and appreciated - not sure I buy the first one totally, because I've known too many artists who claim as much but then really, really, do "hunger" to be recognized and appreciated on some level - I think that's just human and applies to all walks of life not just art - one thing is for sure, art is a piece of yourself - so I think it's more personality than hunger - if you're a pushy bugger, you'll push to get it out there - if you're an intense person, you'll be intense about your work - - if you're a laid back type you'll do what you do and if you get "found" so much the better - and then there's the crabs who go sideways about it - the ones who act like they're above it all, don't care either way, but they DO find a way to get it out there, don't they? by the by, probably should have asked this first - I'm curious what definition of "great" art we're (the list) using - being fashionable, or anti-fashionable, doesn't make it great, just popular and/or trendy - or is that our meter? - I'd always thought great art meant something that touched the spirit so deeply that it moved and inspired us, either individually or as a group - to what I'm not sure, but touched us in some way that changed us and "that's all just my opinion...I could be wrong" Laurel ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #288 *******************************
