It kind of amalgamates Reuters & Over Theirs & takes them somewhere darker.<<< There is something really nasty about that track (in terms of atmosphere). I remember buying it and thinking it totally different to much other Wir(e) although wondering if it was born at the same time as the album or just named after it. It's oddly engrossing, probably in a similar way to 'Over Theirs' as you say. [A-Z] >>>I find it hard to imagine anyone who likes 154 disliking it, although Craig's review on Wireviews is about the most negative thing I've ever read about it from a Wire fan!<<< Having listened to it recently, I think I was perhaps a little harsh on this release. However, although the updated review on the new Wireviews site (in development) is a little different, it's still not overly positive... >>>How can an album with the lyric 'I've got a chicken in my bandolier' not be essential?<<< Funny lyrics; annoying instrumentation -- that was my main problem with it... >>>I'm pretty sure it's still available from Beggars banquet on CD (with 2 demos & all the b-sides tagged on).<<< It's been reissued about 50 times by Beggars, most recently in '99 IIRC. :) >>>Did anyone have any problems with Colin and Malka's live CD? It was only released on CDR, and was alright for a time, but now when I play it it has some real heavy digital distortion sound added to it - something that sounds a bit like vinyl scratches<<< My copy seems fine, but CDRs can (rarely) screw up over time. Your best bet would be to contact Swim directly and tell them about it. Craig. ===== - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://welcome.to/wireviews News, reviews and dugga. True? > Should we make cassettes of them? Hey, one of my least favorite subjects! Basically, CD-R's are more susceptible than magnetic tape to sudden changes in heat and humidity. If you leave CD-R's in a car parked outdoors on a sunny day, then (a) don't, and/or (b) store them in jewel boxes rather than sleeves, because the substrate layer might melt slightly and literally peel off onto the inner sleeve lining or whatever else is in direct contact with it. Think of what happens when you wear a pair of leather pants whilst sitting on an overheated vinyl seat. (I realize some of you might not have had that particular experience.) But as long as you use decent-quality blank media and store your discs in a cool, dry room with a nice stable temperature, they should last for years and years, even in sleeves, and at least as long as cassettes if not a wee bit longer. John Hedges ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 00:49:39 +0100 From: Tim Subject: [idealcopy] Oh Sod it! lets listen to some tunes! Album Reviews. Richie Hawtin - Closer to the edit (Mute Records) Its a DJ Mix but in the DJ X DJ vein, being constructed in the computer environment entirely from sampled loops of sparse, minimal techno sourced from over 100 records of the minmal, bass-heavy variety. Hawtin must own thousands of near-identical 12"s and kindly presents the interesting 3 seconds of each one on this compilation. (If one can call it that). But its good listening and compared to his last mix ('Decks, FX and a 909') suprisingly rich and varied. Flashes of melody interrupt the steady rhythm, and given that all the information was sampled from vinyl, the surface noise/vinyl flaw adds another looped texture throughout.....wonder if he's been listening to Phillip Jeck? Probably not. Spiritualized - Let it Come Down Mixed reviews for this one. Well this one won't convince the many Spiritualized-haters on this list but I still think its a belter. The critics say it isn't as good as the last one....well to me "Ladies & Gentlemen..." was a rather patchy record, whereas this is a big, classic pop record in the spirit of Brian Wilson/Phil Spector! They've followed the same warped-Pop direction that Mercury Rev have taken and to my ears have made a better job. Its laden with hooks and peaks, manic pop thrills, Beach Boys harmonies, Krautrock-style trance-outs, sleazy rock & roll, and the last number is a great version of Spacemen 3 track 'Lord Can You Hear Me' done as duet by Jason with Mimi from Low. Its big....maybe its not that clever...but If you like preposterous, maximalist, OTT orchestral drone-rock/pop then get this! Someone said The Stooges for Airports.....I say its ELO being forced to deputise for The Velvets in a particularly sordid night at the Factory.
