There's only one album: 'The First Letter'. Although the production is iffy to say the least, it's one of the better Mute releases. In my opinion (at least material-wise) it's only really bettered by '154' although I suspect many on the list would disagree. Best listened to through headphones so you can hear the stuff that's buried in the mix. > Is a-z an essential album, in your opinion(s)? In my opinion, not really -- what's Colin's done since is far better. However, if you like Wire you may as well pick it up anyway. A-Z is very high on my list. I think only the Ideal Copy, IBTABA and maybe A Bell Is A Cup (this one depends on my mood) rate higher. And, even then, sometimes it comes out ....(wait for it).... Ahead! (^_^) By the way, I'm one of the few "prefers 80's Wire" people on the list, so take my opinion with whatever grain of salt you like. There's only one Wir album and it's quite different to the Wire eighties albums. Lots of techno/dance influences are taken on board and Graham does more singing than Colin. Just after that was released they were interviewed by (The) Wire magazine & Colin at least seemed to see it as a very different thing to Wire in the eighties. It's quite a good record that for me took many listens to grow in, but I really wouldn't rate it as highly as most of the Wire albums. Surely you're curious enough to hear it for yourself though? The Vien EP is a later release documenting a session for ORF in Vienna and includes the track 'The First Letter' which I think is one of the best things they ever did, with or without the 'e'. It kind of amalgamates Reuters & Over Theirs & takes them somewhere darker. >>>>Is a-z an essential album, in your opinion(s)? Yes. It's like a little brother to 154. I find it hard to imagine anyone who likes 154 disliking it, although Craig's review on Wireviews is about the most negative thing I've ever read about it from a Wire fan! How can an album with the lyric 'I've got a chicken in my bandolier' not be essential? It was the first solo Wire album I heard and is still probably one of the 3 I listen to most... (the others being Bruce Gilbert's Ab Ovo & Music for Fruit... and those Ocsid CD's have got a lot of plays too... so did Bastard...). I'm pretty sure it's still available from Beggars banquet on CD (with 2 demos & all the b-sides tagged on). Behind the Curtain is definitely out of print, and it seems pretty unlikely that EMI will reissue it. Bizarrely, there is a copy in Manchester City Library. They have no other Wire CD's. BTW if anyone cares about my favourite records there's a list on the 'links' page of my website, with links to sites concerning the records. Lock up your hats!
