In '79, I also first heard Pere Ubu, Captain Beefheart, and the Gang of Four, all of whom I still listen to often. I just finished the Wire biog ("Everybody loves...") and it sent me running back to listen to Wire and Wire-related items such as Colins "Commercial Suicide" and "It seems", both of which I also love. It also made me want to hear "Behind the Curtain" and "Manscape" badly, but I don't have those. Are they still available somewhere? I only saw Wire once, in Boston on June 14, 1987. GREAT show. Graham was wearing a suit, and some smarties in the audience sang the chorus of Mr. Suit to him in a song break, which cracked me up. Just yesterday, for another list I belong to, we were posting Top 20 Favorite albums, and for yesterday at least, these were mine: Brian Eno- Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) Neil Young- Tonight's the Night Wire- Pink Flag Television- Marquee Moon Talking Heads- Fear of Music Captain Beefheart- Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) The Blue Nile- A walk across the rooftops Rain Tree Crow- same Roxy Music- same Nick Drake- Pink Moon Matthew Sweet- Girlfriend G Love and Special Sauce- same Freedy Johnston- Trouble Tree Muddy Waters- Hard Again Miles Davis- Kind of Blue Pere Ubu- The Modern Dance Violent Femmes- same Bob Dylan & The Band- Basement Tapes The Dream Syndicate- The Days of Wine and Roses The Velvet Underground- Loaded My music collection, if you wish to see the extent of a musical obsession, is at: http://members.tripod.com/raggedglory57/index.htm My apologies if this was/is too long or not chirpy enough. I've just moved house & been off the net for 3 weeks.Got a new phoneline in upstairs & it's great !! Well Brian as a snapshot of your 20 best I would think the majority on the list wouldn't argue with a listen to those albums over an eveniing with a six pack of beer & a few friends round. My 20 would include several electronic albums but I've got 10 of your 20 in my collection & no your introduction was just right. By the way, I observed the 3 minute silence in my office yesterday as did most of the UK & out of the window I saw people stop their cars in the street & get out. It seemed a long 3 minutes to me.And then it was normal again. Like Laurel says, life goes on. I just hope that's the end of innocent people getting killed on account of a minority of anarchic fanatics...but somehow I doubt it. NP. Red Lorry Yellow Lorry -- Nothing Wrong CD BTW did I mention already how great the new Plaid CD is...Ok I'll get me coat Cheers Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 17:29:25 EDT From: CHRISWIRE@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Chirpy new member intro In a message dated 15/09/01 19:14:06 GMT Daylight Time, dpbailey@worldnet.att.net writes: > dan, 42 (in 2 days at least) & residing in darkest arkansas > > > > Dan what a fantastic 60.Deeply enjoyable scan through that lot.Got alot of those too. What kind of music are these? Were the early Mekons similiar sounding to Go4? How were/are the Wir albums? Is a-z an essential album, in your opinion(s)? Are >they still available somewhere?<< Manscape is probably still available direct from Mute. Go to www.mute.com and follow the links to the Mute Bank. Most 80s Wire and related stuff is still available. BTC is I suspect deleted, but not that old, so should still be available. Try www.gemm.com, www.netsounds.com or www.half.com. Failing that, search on Ebay.
