["ian jackson" Subject: [idealcopy] Re: I like the Beatles but do I have to like Dylan? just thought i'd add my view to this one... i used to hate Dylan with a passion, as was the case with Beefheart, to a lesser extent. now i really really enjoy (love?) their stuff as much as Wire's output. with Dylan, up to and including Blonde On Blonde, its all good IMO. havent heard much after that, apart from Blood On The Tracks, which is a great lp. i think i simply didnt have 'the right ears', or maybe even enough 'life experience' for Dylan, or the Captain, until i was ready for them. thats it really. as usual, its an 'each to their own' job... ian.s.j. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Sep 2001 05:02:30 -0700 (PDT) From: John Roberts Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: I like the Beatles but do I have to like Dylan? My partner is a big, big Dylan fan (tho not to the extent of bootlegs etc). I'm more inclined to agree with whoever said he sounded like a 6 min rant on one chord. I just don't see the attraction but then she seems to have the same pov on the Fall. It has to be said that if plugging your guitar into an electric amp is the height of your career, well... Beefheart is something else entirely imo. But I do know people who imo mistakenly lump him in with a load of hippy rock dross and fail to see why I like him. So who's up for the Prefects gigs then? Brian Wilson lives in the Fox Valley (St Charles?), so he is 11/2 - 2 hours from the fairgrounds. Nice weather predicted! I saw Cheap Trick there many years ago (also local, from Rockford, Illinois), and they played a wonderful show. As discussed on list about debut / 1st albums, Cheap Trick's 1st is best in my opinion, as they went mainstream pop thereafter. Leaving to 'Maxwell Street' now (Canal & Roosevelt / 2 blocks South of Chicago Post Office) for the market and free live music. Anyone familiar with the 'Blues Brothers' movie has an idea of what this is about (portable generators whirling in background, scents of food in the air, etc.). Finally, these are the last hours of Burningman 2001. See streaming live video from Black Rock Nevada of today's / tonight's events. 'The Burn' should take place at dark, mountain standard time (you figure it out). Go to: http://www.burningman.com This might just be the place where Madonna gets some of her ideas and hires stage performers for her shows (LOL!!). Enjoy your Labor Day Holiday & Rays of Light everybody! 'He knows' was first played in the 'reformation' gigs. It sounded shambolic at RFH, but was a really good track by the time Wire played at The Garage. 'Germ ship' was something of a fun track, if a regression back to 'Pink Flag' style. Mind you, the vocal delivery and arrangement reminded me of Shampoo. Then again, I still think 'Janet' sounds like Robert Palmer, so I'll shut up now. Craig. ===== - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://welcome.to/wireviews News, reviews and dugga. I think every Gilbert and/or Lewis fan should listen to this. Musique Concrete. It sounds funny to me. I first heard about Pierre Henry from Bruce Gilbert actually! He used a lot of musique concrete / early electroacoustic music in his Beekeeper sets, especially early on. Haven't heard that particular release, but anyone curious about Pierre Henry should probably pick up the reissue of 'Messe Pour Le Temps Present' which features four pieces (the most extreme one edited to half original length) that sum up his output fairly well. 'La Ville' (1984) using field recordings from of a city as source material is also highly listenable and quite astonishing really. Any other Pierre Henry fans on IC? Would you care to mention favourite releases & briefly describe them? Are they 'old toss' or 'genuine phenomena'? Craig D was wrong >>>>Isn't Haswell the head of the Blast First label? No, Paul Smith is. He also manages Wire. I think Haswell might have something to do with the OR label but I'm not sure about that. Paul CD heard something interesting on the radio >>>>it was played after a boredoms remix that i think may have been done by fennesz There have been at least 3 'Rebore' Boredoms remix discs out on WEA Japan done by Ken Ishii, DJ Krush & UNKLE. Could this be the fourth one? If so I'll have to find a copy. It isn't easy getting hold of most Boredoms releases in the UK, what with them being signed to the biggest entertainment corporation on the planet. BTW the fianl part of that Keith Levene interview is now online at http://www.furious.com/perfect/keithlevene4.html Rick asked >>>>BTW - who wouldn't walk across the street to see Dylan play for free! Not if Wire were playing on my side of the street. If it was Dylan the sleepy rabbit from Magic Roundabout it would be a difficult choice though. Lock up your hats!
