Don't know if I want that though! ;-) Perhaps I may suggest "Alien Lanes" & "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars" It really is GBV at it's best! In my view Robert Pollard is one of those very rare geniuses that's able to be traditional and innovative at the same time. Of course I knew of his Beatle-tick but to find Wire's 154 at nr. 2 in his alltime fav. list indeed is a pleasant surprise. Come to think of it, "Ex-Supermodel" [Alien Lanes] surely is a wink at Pink Flag's ex-Liontamer/Mannequin... [you should hear this: A guy snoring through-out the song - it's sharp, funny and beautiful at the same time...] "Underwater Explosions" [Under the Bushes, Under the Stars] versus Wire's Underwater Experiences? Coincidence? I think not! What I personally find disturbing about the list, and might be a reason that while I think everybody should own one GBV album, there's no reason to have a lot of em - is - look at the list - it's all 60's and 70's mainstream rock, albeit excellent rock. The only 80's record is REM's Mumur and that is a 60's throwback. I'd not be suprised that Glass was on a Ravi special, he studied w/ Pandit Nam Prath (as well, Terry Riley and Steve Reich (I believe) did Eastern studies) and has collaborated - Passages(?) with R. Shankar. It makes a whole field of study, both in avante-rock and avante-classical and the overlap of how the concept of the drone, of pure harmonics, of microtones changed the way we regard cool music now. Lamonte Young, John Cale, Tony Conrad, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Charlamaigne Palestine, Pauline Oliveros, Angus McLease are all of a class to me. - Steve.
