Honestly, I'm surprised when a second album isn't total crap. Most performers spend enough time gigging or otherwhile honing their sound and paring out the crap that their first release is usually the best. Only the best songs and the best sounds survive a year or two of performance. Then, they are expected by fans and critics to turn around and duplicate the process in six months. Seconds tend to be a rehash of what worked the first time or a desperate stab at the flaor of the month, i.e., the afro celtic drum and bass album etc. The ones that work best in my view are those that find a way to evolve their sound. PF to CM, by way of example. Getting a good third one out is a sign of real skill and staying power. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 22:25:12 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Graeme=20Rowland?= Subject: [idealcopy] Beauty Nowhere Tim lifted us out of the mouldy old eighties rut >>>>I've heard a couple of tracks by Scala which featured a few ex-Seefeel members which were OK, and I belive they have done a couple of LPs on Touch. Anyone heard em? Yep, I've got all 3 albums (there's also one on Too Pure) and a couple of singles, one of which has a phenomenal remix by Bruce Gilbert which is their masterpiece (wow, someone mentioned a band with a Wire connection we don't see that happen too often these days!). This single, 'Slide' also features 'Vitamin X' so you ought to get hold of a copy Craig! Bruce likes Scala a lot, but this isn't all that surprising as they sound quite similar to AC Marias at times. 'Hold Me Down' (first thing I heard by them on a Touch sampler) would fit in quite nicely on 'Yclept' actually, in the same way 'Cruel When Complete' fits in on 'Dome One'. The 'Beauty Nowhere'album (Touch) is brilliant, the other two less so, but they have their moments. One of their very best tracks only appears on Touch Sampler 00. I think one major difference is that Sarah Peacock sings words in Scala. The other ex-Seefeel person is Darren Seymour I think, the other Scala member being Mark Van Hoen. They don't seem to play live very often, if at all? The Too Pure album ('To You in Alpha') turns up very cheap used in Manchester quite frequently - obviously too many promos sent out to people who work in the music biz and therefore aren't interested in listening to new music. The funny thing is I only have one track by Seefeel - maybe we should swap tapes? Lock up your hats! Peter did a tour last year with just a guitarist and vioin player and just released a live album of that tour. The photo is of the 4 guys in typical pose and with bold signatures in the black background over their respective heads by each in white/silver felt pen. The web address (search 'Wire') is www.vicioussloth.com.au for those who are interested (for the shop is indeed called Vicious Sloth Collectables, and is reputable: they say someone 'connected' with the band came up with the autos. I think they are authentic, but I obviously can't give any guarantees). They are priced at 25 of the Aussie peso which is around 13-14 US $$$$$ equivalent, plus postage naturally. Pretty good if autographs are your bag. (This is not a paid ad, I have no connection with this shop. Just thought someone on the list might be interested.) Dark Magus - Nightwatchmen (not Richard H. Kirk's best work...it's ok, not great) Mira Calix - Prickle e.p. At first i was horrified that Billy from Smashing Pumpkins will participate, but now i forgive him.. But, Bobby Gillespie ruined Rock The Shack , and song without him is also as one outfit from Primal Scream 6-7 years ago.. It seems that JD aura rising again..
