Warm, emotional melodies sit side by side with overdrive. Elsewhere its looped, ambient digital guitar mangling which lies somewhere on the My Bloody Valentine axis with a Brian Wilson undercurrent. Tailor made for me! I've always been fascinated by the idea of harnessing a fearsome racket and making it melodic and beautiful and Mr Fennesz has done just that. You can tell that he's also a great guitar player (beneath the noise) and joins my favourites: Bruce Gilbert, Kevin Sheilds, Jason Pierce, Vinny Reilly and Maurice Deebank (from Felt). Inspiring stuff. But what are his other records like? Hmm... I think my point wasn't so much oneupmanship, more the comparison between a shitload of people buying RW stuff due to it being "in" and all their mates grabbing it, despite the fact that it's corporate puppetry. This isn't oneupmanship, meerly observation and certainly true of many people in their teens and early '20s. "Is there no emotional pull to music used in adverts?" I think you missed my point here -- I meant people being led in by the advertising of specific acts, not people getting excited due to a piece of music being used _in_ an advert. "Anyway, weren't you telling us all that Orbital ought to be shot a few weeks ago?" Yes, but if you take that in context, I was saying they should be shot for releasing a terribly lazy album, seemingly devoid of effort and excitement, and not a patch on the like of 'In Sides'. I may have said the same thing about DM and 'Ultra', another amazingly lazy album. "This is the most pointless subject ever discussed on IC because it is just utterly pompous for one person to assume they can know the reasons why anyone else listens to music." One can therefore make the argument that everything discussed on this list is pointless, as anyone can assume they know the reasons why someone does something. It's just as "pompous" to declare that 'Pink Flag' is better or worse than First Letter, or that Immersion is better or worse than Dome. It's a case of points-of-view and Devil's Advocate -- discussion -- that's what the list is supposed to be about. It's certainly a hell of a lot more interesting than opening my in-box to find 50 lists of what people listened to last night. Anyway, I'm outta here. Craig. However, I would have say that retorts to postings in this list definately take the cake for "oneupmanship", and again, certainly more pompous than I. ~ I asked my teenage niece and her friend if they liked "rock" music. The friend's response: "My Dad listens to Rock music". This I find more provocative than anything I've read on this list ...ever. Whatever they listen to, they find infinitely more "cool" than anything I ever listen to, and which I've observed to "move" them as well. The difference between "cool" and "move" is probably semantic in this context. c shop@wiremailorder.com http://www.wiremailorder.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 15:35:37 +0100 From: "Ian B" Subject: [idealcopy] OT - Coil on TV For those UK listers who own televisions, tonight on C4 10.55pm 'Hello Culture 'Badness' - Matthew Collings explores contemporary culture and its links to the past.
