Craig said >>>>In my experience, most people don't listen to anything outside the charts, maybe now and again veering to stuff that is "similar" to the stuff they listen to anwyay. In my experience most people don't actually buy stuff that's in the charts, not that I presume to know most people. >>>>Music is like any other fashion: a lot of people listen to what their friends are listening to -- maybe because they think it's "cool" -- not due to being moved by it, or it being any good. (Yes, I know that is totally subjective...) How can you tell they are not moved by it? I don't agree that 'Music is like any other fashion'. People can think music is "cool" *and* be moved by it at the same time... >>>>Unless, of course, there is something I'm missing about Robbie Williams, Atomic Kitten, Hear'Say and so on... What you were missing was that many people appear to be moved by vapid piffle. But of course you weren't missing much! >>>>This isn't the case for most people on this list, because many of them have a genuine interest in music, rather than just grabbing it as another fashion item. However, I would side with Charles that there is a certain element of "cool oneupmanship", at least as an undercurrent, along with some bullshit stigma attached to certain acts that have more than flirted with the pop world (DM, etc). But Wire have flirted with the pop world too! The problem I had with Depeche Mode was that Tim declared them subversive (to put it in context). This led to all those silly subversive eighties pop routines & me taking the piss out of Depeche Mode a bit. It had nothing to do with "cool oneupmanship" and wasn't an attempt to stigmatise all you poor traumatised DM fans. The worst 'one upmanship' I've seen on IC is Charles dismissal of anything mentioned in The Wire, and ordering people to 're-evaluate their music tastes'. >>>>I guess people like what they like, but it would be totally naive to suggest that many, many people are not directed by advertising, their mates, or whether they think an act or "genre" is cool, rather than any emotional pull... But all these things overlap. There are many reasons why people listen to music. It seems silly to single out any one (or 3) as the reason why 'most people' listen to music. Just because their mates listen to it &/or they think its cool doesn't mean it has no emotional pull. So your dismissal of Robbie Williams isn't 'cool oneupmanship' then? Is there no emotional pull to music used in adverts? It would be naive to suggest so... I would've thought that was one of the main reasons it was picked by advertisers! People aren't necessarily 'directed' by advertising as such, but adverts do expose them to tunes which may or may not move them in some way. Depeche Mode seem as vacuous as Robbie Williams to me (I'm being subjective when I say that, as if I need to point out such terribly thoughtless self importance). Not so much bullshit stigma, as just plain bullshit! Anyway, weren't you telling us all that Orbital ought to be shot a few weeks ago? We must all remember to only say nice things about pop stars from now on! This is the most pointless subject ever discussed on IC because it is just utterly pompous for one person to assume they can know the reasons why anyone else listens to music. I suggest that the reasons why most people listen to music are way more complicated than Charles' contradictory theories. These theories do not necessarily account for why people listen to music, but perhaps why they get to hear it in the first place. These are different things. I'm planning a compilation of Kluba Cupol covers. Please send your submisssions to ... nah, only joking as usual... Delia Derbyshire RIP Lock up your hats! The Lewis track definitely fits in better with Dome 1 aesthetically than 154 I think. Robert's Repetitive Stoats instrumental wouldn't sound out of place on Colin's A-Z album whilst Colin's track should've been used as a big money spinner vacuum cleaner ad. It's pretty unlikely a fourth Wire studio album recorded in 1980 or so would have ended up sounding like this EP though (as jokingly suggested by German punky), more likely Catapult 30 & 2nd Length & the second disc of D&E give a better clue. Greetings fellow copyists~ I wanted to pass this on especially to the IC-Residents fans. A company in Santa Rosa, California called the Esoteric Music Group is about to close and they are selling off their merchandise at ridiculous prices! They mainly carry Ralph Records stuff, but also carry Negativeland, Half Japanese and others. It's worth checking out, but is going quick. Their URL is: http://www.emg3000.com And for the record, I picked up a Snakefinger live CD and VHS tape and two Residents bumper stickers for just under $30, including 1st class postage! Take care all!
