["Cambra, Robert" Subject: [idealcopy] Music sheep "Really I think that most people do listen to music that moves them in some way, not just to impress their mates or because the adverts told them to do it!" In my experience, most people don't listen to anything outside the charts, maybe now and again veering to stuff that is "similar" to the stuff they listen to anwyay. Music is like any other fashion: a lot of people listen to what their friends are listening to -- maybe because they think it's "cool" -- not due to being moved by it, or it being any good. (Yes, I know that is totally subjective...) Unless, of course, there is something I'm missing about Robbie Williams, Atomic Kitten, Hear'Say and so on... This isn't the case for most people on this list, because many of them have a genuine interest in music, rather than just grabbing it as another fashion item. However, I would side with Charles that there is a certain element of "cool oneupmanship", at least as an undercurrent, along with some bullshit stigma attached to certain acts that have more than flirted with the pop world (DM, etc). I guess people like what they like, but it would be totally naive to suggest that many, many people are not directed by advertising, their mates, or whether they think an act or "genre" is cool, rather than any emotional pull... Here it is again! Well Tim & I agree here! >"HERE THEY COME lalalalalala lalalalalala the art time punks. Er, that's the TV Personalities, not Wire! >The original pogoists gone artists. Bruce Gilbert did almost pogo in Edinburgh... is this prophetic then? >From sweaty drunken nights down the Roxy to a 'completely new approach to presenting music' and anti-rockism only took three small steps for mankind - the set of WIRE LPs (who ever really listened to that RT double live affair?) Er Mark did, I did, etc, etc... These dolts don't rate Witness to the Fact & Ally In Exile then? Somebody wheel in the Eden! He'll polish a witness in his dreams BUT what's wrong with some rough edges, Pete? Maybe they just never made it to the 2nd disc. >They started from scratch, learned to master their incompetence, Colin was never incompetent & Pink Flag sounds far from incompetent... >and finally faded away because Er, no they didn't, but it's perhaps convenient for yr 'punk rock' corporate bosses to disseminate such disinformation. I guess we can put this down to ignorance though. The sleevenotes seem to suggest that we should. >their version of the ultimate pop single flopped as badly as everything else they did. We all know Outdoor Miner flopped due to EMi gerrymandering. It was a blessing in disguise I feel. If it had been a big hit I think it is less likely that Wire would still exist... The album actually fills side 1 with several versions of Wire's ultimate pop single (Dot Dash, I am the Fly, Mannequine, Map Ref, etc.) and actually I think it makes a nicer companion to the first 3 albums than the seemingly randomly flung together 'On Returning' selection. >"But to the original punk rockers and pogo kids they were as vital as, say, the Buzzcocks, Clash or the Boys. Dare I say more vital? As someone who has only heard one (mediocre) song by the Boys (First Time)? The Clash & Buzzcocks got worse with every record whereas Wire got better... >They persuaded many a fanzine editor to change the look of his mag, Says Lewis; Have you punky lads read about Joseph Beuys? And Tim, why should I copy Wire's aesthetic? >they created two real classics in 12XU and I am the fly, Only 2????????!!!!!!!!!!!! >and they showed to a few people that there's more to Pink Floyd than the dark side of the animals. (But did they know where Syd really lived?) ie. 'Pink Floyd early records selling slow' They are on label what pays us. BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY >"So we here at Sneaky Pete say a big FANX to WIRE for all they did (and some of what they did not, just imagine the horrors of a fourth LP turning out like the freebie EP that went with 154!) So these semi-retards never got to hear DOME 1 because their PUNKY bosses never sent them a freebie promo???? This is what I meant about dismissing the solo stuff though, since that EP was 4 'solo' efforts (well, except that Colin was on Roberts track). >and bollocks to those who don't appreciate that. JANIE J. JONES" And Wire presumably considered these notes to be bollocks, which is why Kevin Eden got to write some slightly more level headed ones later on. In their defence perhaps we should remember that this was written in 1984. As Sneaky only liking 2 People in a Room off 154 as Mark jested, I think that one was left off the comp in favour of I Should've Known Better... From sweaty drunken nights at the Roxy to sweaty drunken nights at the Garage! But where is Sneaky Pete now? And why wasn't he asked to write some notes for Its All In The Brochure? Here it is again! Graeme, << From sweaty drunken nights at the Roxy to sweaty drunken nights at the Garage! But where is Sneaky Pete now? And why wasn't he asked to write some notes for Its All In The Brochure? >> Sneaky Pete/Janie J Jones/Peter Hein was a very punky man. He left his own band (Fehlfarben) after the first album (Monarchie und Alltag) because the others wanted to add some colour to the sound. Result? Superior second album (33 tage in ketten) with guitarist taking over vocals. Hein formed a new band called Family 5 who were even punkier than the original Fehlfarben. This would be around 82-83 - similar time to the ...and here it is...compilation. At which time Wire had indeed "faded away".... Surprised Pete didn't enjoy Eels sang lino though! He was last spotted fronting a reformed original Fehlfarben in the early 90s. Something of a legend in Germany - sort of a German Joe Strummer. Tonight I am mostly listening to Stereolab - Captain Easychord I don't care what Graeme says, these just get better and better. 4 tracks of lush, expansive pop perfection with Jim O'Rourke at the controls. As with all their EPs this works as a mini LP of sonic suprises, melodic twists and turns. Notebooks out Brian Wilson! Kratftwerk - Computer World Cheap Replacement for my knackered vinyl copy which sounds like Phillip Jeck has been using it! But what a wonderful, hypnotic record this is. Chock-full of classic electro moments that designed the future. You know that already. Wir - The First Letter Finally picked this up today, having resisted it for some time it was a Bargain at 3 Quid Yeah! sod it! Blimey! Its actually not half bad! OK it does sound like a band fighting against its own legacy, and trying a little too hard to sound contemporary for 1991. I suppose at the time it had to contend with Acid House and the likes of 'Loveless' by My Bloody Valentine, so it was buried under all that innovation. I find this a lot more enjoyable than Manscape...it certainly sounds a lot more like 'Wire' than that record. Tinny drum machines let it down, but dig deeper and there is the dugga! Cabaret Voltaire - Nag Nag Nag/Yashar CD Single Not seen this before, nice to have a noisy, digital version to replace knackered 12" Aphex Twin - 2 Remixes by AFX Limited edition silliness from Richard D James. The 'remix' in question is an ancient acid house track by 808 State. Aphex pulls out his bad cock and chops and slices the track to death, with scary vocoder effects . But he does this in a very funky manner that tedious student pranksters like V/vm could only (wet) dream about, whilst writhing around in their semen encrusted pyjama bottoms in Stockport...like fools. Looking forward to his new LP which appears to have about 40 tracks on it according to the Warp website. _________________________ The Kids Are Alright http://www.kidsindestructible.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 21:37:23 -0400 From: "Cambra, Robert" Subject: [idealcopy] Now what do I do?
