Very sad news.Had his own radio show too eventually & became a bit of a celebrity instead of a "behind the scenes" man. Only 63. A great loss. Had the pleasure of meeting the man a few moons ago with John Peel. Very funny and pleasurable afternoon. Probably not so well know in the USA but John Walters was the producer of John Peel's show in the 60's and 70's (they heyday) and responsible for kicking down the doors of BBC conservatism. Went on to be broadcaster in his own right with his dry laconic humour. Always a pleasure to listen to. ===== kevin eden wmo limited, po box 112, stockport, cheshire, sk3 9fd, uk e-mail: wmouk@yahoo.com web: www.wiremailorder.com "dreams that money can buy" Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! His Saturday afternoon show in the 80s introduced me to a lot of good stuff - in art and in music and whatever it is that lies in between. He was, like me, a Palace supporter - once likened supporting them to being stuck in the lift. Too true. What album? I just think of harmonies when thinking of the Beach Boys, and liked what Jesus and Mary Chain or Yo La Tengo did with the Beach Boys sound... (one that I am not terribly familiar with, I must admit). >> It's not the fun fun fun, Surfin' USA BB sound that plays a part in Mercury Rev (and particularly) FLips' sound. It's the experimental Brian Wilson of Pet Sounds and the unreleased Smile album in particular. Smile (scheduled to be released in January 1967) was a massively experimental album - but for a variety of very complex reasons was canned when about 90% complete. Some of it came out on later BB albums (eg Surf's Up, and Cabinessence). Bootlegs exist, though few of them get it right.
