I remember a (mid to late '80s) interview with NO. Hooky's response to the interviewer's bewilderment that there was not a slew of NO copy bands was "well the Cure have had a damn good try". There's also a (slight) similarity in the proliferation of single-word song titles. > > > > >>In terms of 80s Wire, to me the distinctive sound is that of > >>Gotobed's high-hat/snare-drum playing... > > > >agreed, especially TIC. > > I guess tIC provided the first hearing of it... though I am more > partial to its role in the swirling songs found in A Bell is a Cup, > such as Follow the Locust (a personal fave of mid-period Wire). Extractions is an all-time fave of mine even though it suffers from Robin Guthries slightly one-dimensional early production style. > A second on this. I too was looking out for Richard Thomas on FSOL label but I never heard of any release (even though there was a big piece in Future Music some time ago). He also drummed for Moose (i don't care if they were shoegazers, i loved 'em!) and Jesus and Mary Chain and played sax on a couple of Cocteaus tracks over the years. Top bloke. Don't know what he's doing now. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 17:30:47 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Graeme=20Rowland?= Subject: [idealcopy] Drums Go To Bed "In terms of 80s Wire, to me the distinctive sound is that of Gotobed's high-hat/snare-drum playing... which was rather endearing to me for some reasons, though other drummers did not find it appealing." Craig's drummer saw the light! >>>>My old drummer thought it was pap and really dull... until he listened to an '80s Wire CD all the way through. A drummer I know who went to see Wire in Nottingham opined that Robert was not a very good drummer. I found this quite hard to believe. It's kind of like saying that Bruce plays simple riffs therefore he's not a good guitarist, ie. missing the point entirely. What Robert does is perfect for Wire (especially now!) although I guess he's going to have to go a bit faster than Ginger Baker! There's a place for flamboyant drumming, but it probably isn't in Wire. Synchronise watches at 1805... It slowly melted in the window. It wasn't stolen or nibbled by the brick hurler. It is quite likely that someone just objected to it for some reason. But the riff/structure is basically the same. Whether subliminally or consciously, the composer borowed one of the major building blocks - and then created a new piece of music.
