Consists of two tracks - Five More String Quartets - performed by the Soldier String Quartet (a very cool experimental NYC outfit, loosely affiliated w/ the Band of Susans) and Early Winter - a 45 minute peice w/ Susan Stenger on flute, the aformentioned Soldiers and Eberhard Blum on prerecorded eight channel tape playing bass flute. The work is simply transcendental. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 11:41:35 EDT From: Eardrumbuz@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] last night i was mostly listening to: section 25 but i also listened to: attrition and wire and in the afternoon i listened to: durutti column and today i am listening to: scenic - -paul c.d. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 18:30:43 +0100 From: "ian jackson" Subject: [idealcopy] OT - this week i've mostly been listening to... "commercial zone" is good , but not really THAT good. hardly much of a feat to piss all over the dire "this is what you want" effort. p Well, like Levene says Lydon's lyrics are crap. Although he hadn't quite plumbed the depths of 'Rise' at that point. Then there's that stupid Lou Reed rip off song and the turgid dated funk workouts, which only leaves 'The Slab' which I think Lydon reworked under a different title slightly better on 'This is what', and the music of 'Blue Water' & 'Where Are You' which is like Metal Box but much weaker. I quite liked the single version of 'This is not a love song' at the time, I think that had Levene's guitar. From the interview and the records they made after he quit, it's clear that Levene was the lynchpin, although his descriptions of the songwriting process for Metal Box do seem to start with the comment, "Wobble had this bassline..." quite often. Listening to (re-evaluating even, but how do you put value on such a priceless work of art?) Metal Box on my new 500W amp, I have to say that Memories, Poptones, Chant, Careering & Graveyard are still some of the most amazing tracks ever recorded, so cut Levene some slack there! Funny that he rates 'The Suit' as the worst Metal Box track too, since this is the one I tend to skip... although Lydon's later 'heavy rock' reworking with John McGeoch on guitar was a total joke. Even funnier that he rates Stone Temple Pilots so highly! Nearly as uncool as listening to Jethro Tull in 2001 (or any other time). There are parallels between early PiL & Wire circa Pink Flag. Gilbert and Wobble are both hardly virtuosos but incredibly inventive. Levene and Newman are much more proficient and have a great ear for melody. Lewis and Wobble both play very powerfully. Dudanski and Gotobed keep a hard beat perfectly no matter what. Is there anyone on this list who doesn't like Metal Box? That Levene interview is an absolute must for anyone even vaguely interested in PiL. Did anyone else hear the great music Wobble did recently with Evan Parker? Pisses all over bleedin' Pistols reunions. Now I'd pay to hear Lydon, Levene, Wobble & Dudanski (or Walker) if they got a reunion together. Actually Wobble, Levene & Dudanski minus Lydon might be even better! Actually it would probably be a bit odd since Levene mentions that a key element in the PiL chemistry was that Wobble could only just play and quite clearly he's quite proficient now. And it's not very likely to happen. I'd really like to have instrumental versions of Metal Box & Flowers of Romance too and not just so I can do punk rock karaoke practice! I've got the 12" of Flowers of Romance which features an 'extended' version which is the 7" version followed by a very slightly remixed instrumental version - brilliant! I've also got the 12" of Memories which is a different mix to metal box and levels it all off and doesn't do that great fade up that the album version does. Also Cowboy Song from the flipside of Public Image is one of the most gleefully cacophonic poptones ever recorded & ends in a great locked groove. It's on a par with 'Former Airline'. What a missed opportunity that PiL box was. ===== Cracked Machine irregular cyberzine http://www.webinfo.co.uk/crackedmachine "What one thinks of as extremes seldom are" :: BC Gilbert Get your free @yahoo.co.uk address at http://mail.yahoo.co.uk or your free @yahoo.ie address at http://mail.yahoo.ie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 16:57:20 EDT From: CHRISWIRE@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Keith Levene Metal Box In a message dated 26/06/01 19:54:45 GMT Daylight Time, crackedmachine@yahoo.co.uk writes: > Is there anyone on this list who doesn't like Metal > Box? > > I bought a copy the day it was released ... loved it & still love it now. It's a shame I had to take 3 copies back to the shop because of bad pressings.
