He literally played ... just sat at the mixing board while local musicians took turns droning over his tapes. The only Wire connection here is that those of you who are interested in Graham and Bruce's more "Zen" influened material (for lack of a better term)--say Oscid, This way, Shiv. Man, etc. shouldn't miss him if you get a chance. Absolutely spellbinding. I'll just add for those who don't know and may be curious: Niblock is one of the original minimalists, but he recorded very little, and therefore never got placed w/ Glass, Young, Riely, and Riech (he's their age and has been around as long). But his concerts have been a major influence on Glenn Branca, among others. OK, OK. Back to the prog vs. Disco debate. :) ================================ No thanks, it seems disco won! But there is a Wire connection to Niblock. He performed at Disobey (with Susan Stenger on Flute). Bruce DJed at Disobey and also used Niblock's drones as a key element in one of his brilliant 'Swarm' mixes on the 'Deconstruct' compilation. Susan Stenger has also played with Wire (Drill), Bruce (Disobey: Gilbertpossstenger) and covered 3 Wire songs in Band of Susans (Too Late, Ahead, Drill). Band of Susans also supported Wire on a US tour. Niblock records at Robert Poss' NY studio. Poss has played with Wire (Drill) and was also in Band of Susans of course. A Niblock track appears on the '3 Fingers & a Fumb' live at Disobey 2CD which also features Bruce & Dome. Niblock's drones make all the other minimalists pale in comparison. A sample can be heard at the Touch website. The best Niblock recording I've heard is the recent 'Touch Works for Hurdy Gurdy & Voice'. Sorry to bore anyone who remembers me posting this information here previously. Is your mind empty? By my count there are 4. First there is our very own Colin, whom we might call CN1. Then there is C. Newman (C = Chris, so maybe he shouldn't count), who did a jazz album with Janet Smith (supposedly Robert Smith's sister). Then there's the reggae Colin. And now we have Jail Bait Colin.
