Most consistently excellent record label of the last ten years IMHO. I suppose their genius is finding electronic/dance artists who can make coherent full length albums which stand up to repeated listening, rather than just churning short-life dancefloor fodder for DJs (although they did a lot of that as well.) There are a few turkeys among their back catalogue, but most of their stuff is worth hearing. I'd start here: Boards of Canada - 'Music Has the Right to Children' LFO - 'Advance' Plaid - 'Double Figure' or 'Not for Threes' Black Dog Productions - 'Bytes' Autechre - 'Amber' Aphex Twin - 'Ambient Works vol.II' >are those recently released compilations ("routine", "classics", "influences"...etc) a >good way to go? they were cheaply priced too. 'Classics' is a chronological comp of early 12"s including Testone by Cabaret Voltaire offshoot, Sweet Exorcist, which prompted journos to label Warp's ealry output as 'bleep music'! This is from the days when Warp were aiming at the DJ rather than the home listening stuff they did later, so some of it sounds a bit dated. 'Influences' is just lots of late 80s Chicago house and Detroit techno sides that inspired them to start the label. interesting but not an ideal starting point. Routine is a US only compilation, not sure whats on it but I think its meant as an introduction to the label. Probably a good starting point too. happy listening. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 15:39:44 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Graeme=20Rowland?= Subject: [idealcopy] Lamb Cut in Half Ian said >>>>'The Lamb...', it never did anything to me other than want to go one better than Van Gogh. anyway, last year, when i'd finally stopped hating this guy and only pitied him, i decided to get hold of a copy of 'The Lamb...' and see if anything had changed in my opinion of this 'legendary' pain in the arse from my past. I lived with a hippy who played this way too much and it always made me nauseous. However to his credit he also introduced me to the joys of Coil, Neubauten, Faust and Patti Smith. I could never stomach Peter Hammill's singing either, and he had a lot of those records. Later on I found a copy of 'Lamb' for 3p in a bargain bin. I did a 'Marclay' and chopped it in half and spliced it together with a 3p Yes album and it sounded much better that way. As for 're-evaluating my music tastes' I'm currently checking out Eno after being put off by 'Warm Jets' (good songs, horrible glam-wreck sound) and early Roxy Music (very dull and dated) and quite enjoyed 'Green World'. I think it's quite odd that Kevin bigged up the Eno influence on Dome when I interviewed him, as there are just as many similarities in Colin's Not To & Singing Fish albums (both vastly superior to AGW IMO). There is so much great music around right now that going back to listen to an album I hated first time seems a bit silly. As for Flaming Lips, I like all their recordings but 'Transmissions from the Satellite Heart' stands as their peak for me. Lock up your hats! Try 'Taking Tiger Mountain' - my favourite vocal Eno album - one of the best sounding albums ever released, and that was only in 1974. Warm Jets' sound is awful but the album's so good it's worth it. As for Roxy Music, I quite agree with you. > I think it's quite odd that Kevin bigged up the Eno > influence on Dome when I interviewed him, as there are > just as many similarities in Colin's Not To & Singing > Fish albums (both vastly superior to AGW IMO). I wouldn't judge this by any of the Eno albums you mentioned - Most of Eno's albums are more experimental and are mainly dealing with atmospherics & sounds (which sounds more similar to Dome than to Colin's stuff). But Eno's influence goes far beyond the actual tracks you find on his albums. The concept of his working methods is what really counts and what made him such a musical guru from the 70's till now. cheers, giluz ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 16:24:03 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Graeme=20Rowland?= Subject: [idealcopy] A Bargain @ 5 an 50 yeh! Yes Dammit Graeme you are right. All the music I like is crap. I can't believe what a fool I've been all these years. I'm off to trade all my CDs in for the Merzbow 50 CD Box Set. That will come in handy next time I have a dinner party. Thanks for showing me the way. Mind you, I reckon the best band in the world are that little known combo, Flay the Goose Mamma. Most listees will have not heard of them because they are so underground and cool that their fanbase is actually officially minus 1,057. In other words more people actively hate the band than like them. This is probably due to the fact that their latest album 'Poodle Activity' was released in the form of a specially prepared strong smelling gas which was emmitted from special helicopters hovering over Kettering, Swindon and Basingstoke. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #184 *******************************
