Swim~ also doesn't head down a one-way genre alley, reinventing itself as necessary (or not). In these days of small labels nichifying themselves, that's quite a brave but forward-looking stance... CD's, but not the new remastered versions. Do they sound better? Anything new with the packaging? If anyone stumbles onto a pink CD of a live gig by Neu! circa '72 don't be tempted to buy it - it's really awful (sound quality AND content). I find all punk/post-punk acts to be either heavily influenced or just coincidentally similar to the spirit of Neu! #1. Put away your Radiohead and listen to something less boring instead Michael O'Shea (WMO) This reissue of the Dome label classic you ought to know about. A sublime work of unique magical genius. This you must buy if you have any incling of what makes good music. Ask Kevin or Charles to flog you one! If you already have the vinyl Kevin's sleevenotes are illuminating enough to warrant a digital transfer. Robert Normandeau - Sonars (Rephlex) Acousmatic posse biggin' it up with Rephlex massive in full effect! Canada seems to be the hub of electro-acoustic music these days, and this fella wins prizes all over the damn place! He deserves it too, this is powerful stuff indeed! Only 500 copies brought to us lucky listeners by that 'one dimensional' Aphex Twin. Cyclo (Raster-Noton) If you want 'reinvention' then this is as good a disc as any. Those who find Ikeda's purer elongated sine tone headfucks such as the first disc of 'Matrix' (Touch) a little too extreme might find this disc an easy entry into the sonic explorations of the Japanese artist who pioneered 'Onkyo'. This collaboration with Raster-Noton label mastermind Carsten Nicolai is a beat collage extravaganza which pushes on and is even better than the last Pan Sonic album. Now I'm just going to have to feed my ears more of Nicolai's sounds such as Alva Noto. I've never seen a CD package like this before. A black spring pops the CD out of a slim white plastic case. Bardo Pond - Dilate (Matador) Figure out the bizarre workings of the music biz, for I can't. I put on the last Bardo Pond gig in Manchester and Matador sent us 6 copies of 'Set & Setting' so we kept one each and gave the others to the 4 members of support band Stray Light. Despite my offer to put on the band again and after 2 phone calls and too many emails, Matador still seem unwilling to send a copy, even though they've sent a ton of them to people who just sell them to Vinyl Exchange. So I bought it and on first listen its a bit disappointing. Bardo Pond's greatest asset (and they have many) is the full on psyched out guitar maelstroms they crank through more pedals than a muso shop. So here they play lots of acoustic guitars and let the songs breathe in spacious arrangements. Whereas each previous album seemed like a progression this one sounds like a bit of a side step. The first track sounds almost like a Mogwai cover, and whilst I like Mogwai, Bardo Pond have always been miles ahead of those premature baldies. It is good though and it is growing... Rafael Toral - Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance (Touch) A sublime work of unique magical genius. Words sully the majesty of these subtley computer texturised guitar-scapes. This could be referenced to Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke, Eno and Fennesz but is way beyond... Beautiful packaging with big ups to Mego posse. Otomo Yoshihide & Christian Marclay - Moving Parts (Asphodel) Anyone who hasn't heard these 2 genius turntable artists and dares speak of 'reinvention' is just so clueless that their opinions really aren't worth a sheckle. I am now ridiculously devoted to hearing everything these guys have done which isn't difficult in the case of Marclay but Yoshihide is approaching Sun Ra / Merzbow meltdown. There was a track on The Wire sampler a while back, and this gives an indication of the sound here. Neither of them have ever sounded quite like this and they seem to work together almost telepathically. I think Marclay might be spinning a Residents album at one point. Every time I see the name Otomo Yoshihide on a CD cover my eyes light up and I feel like a small child on Christmas morning! V/Vm Help Aphex Twin 2x3" CDS Well, Radiohead were helping him, V/Vm were helping him, everyone loves the Twin (except Mark Bursa because Aphex wasn't 'reinventing' enough and didn't cut it like Cabaret Voltaire or the multi-dimensional Wings). The best cut here is 'Laughing all the way to his tank' which is a spoof cut up of maniac laughter and not a fuck up of an Aphex original like most of this. Richrad James loves it; Warp are keeping shtum. These are nearly gone apparently. Serious bores need not bother. *Golden Oldies* Brian Eno - Another Green World (some major label who probably aren't paying any of the musicians except Phil Collins) Investigated courtesy of City Library after much discussion on Ideal Copy: the missing link between Mike Oldfield & Dome! Phil Collins & John Cale on the same (rather dated) record! Only Eno the Butcher could pull off such a stunt! Just one track stands out as a true classic - 'The Big Ship' which is Eno completely solo. He'd heard Kraftwerk's 'Kometenmelodie' hadn't he? Eno does a Kraftwerk much more convincingly than Poxy Muzak's hilariously lugubrious Can appropriation (on their second album I think?). Wire's 'Small Black Reptile' seems related to 'Sombre Reptiles' by more than just the title. Wire & Dome do it so much better though. "Perhaps my brains are old and scrambled," sang Brian. John Coltrane - Expressions (Impulse!) Another work of sublime magical genius. I like libraries. I am discovering that the key to my enjoyment of Coltrane is 'Rashied Ali on drums'. What would music be like if Coltrane & Ayler were still on planet Earth? ===== Cracked Machine irregular cyberzine http://www.webinfo.co.uk/crackedmachine "What one thinks of as extremes seldom are" :: BC Gilbert Get your free @yahoo.co.uk address at http://mail.yahoo.co.uk or your free @yahoo.ie address at http://mail.yahoo.ie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 13:48:44 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Biggin' up w/ Acousmatic Posse!
