As I reappraise my Wire collection I imagine you'll see a good part of it on eBay. However, certain items - vinyl in particular - I find very difficult to part with. CDs have absolutely no collectable value to me as objects; They're more a commodity or (even worse) a container; does anyone agree? charles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 09:25:25 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Whitechapel I rang the Whitechapel Gallery about the Disobey event. "nervepath" (instant shed volume 2 , 2 x 7") is much rarer. i got one a few months ago and it looks so nice i havn't had the heart to rip it open yet. you want all the material whether it is any good or not, in fact listening to the music is almost secondary to the thrill of the hunt. "commercial suicide" being a prime example ; pretty common on vinyl but really tough to find on cd (i still havn't). i saw a bodeans cd on ebay at $102 , which i thought was staggerring on several levels. another one i'd love to find is "lost weekend" by the monochrome set , same problem. i think desirability just goes along with rarity , if there ain't many around then the price will rocket. p ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 12:11:38 EDT From: MrSodium@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] The collector's dilemma "...in all collections, Sir, the desire of augmenting it grows stronger in proportion to the advance in aquisition; as motion is accelerated by the continuation of the impetus." Samuel Johnson, quoted in Boswell's "Life of Johnson." It's always fun to invoke the classics in order to justify one's hobby. ; ) Wire are one of the few bands worth being completist about. A lot of my music interests don't spill over into mania because having one disc, you in essence have them all. Wire have managed to evolve, progress, whatever you want to call it and still remain interesting. A rare feat, that. tB In a message dated Tue, 29 May 2001 12:22:09 AM Eastern Daylight Time, "Phillip Blakeney" writes: <...snipped> wonder how many list members have the collector bug. I always find it interesting when a mere 'interest' spills over into a 'collection'. For example with an 'interest' in Wire you would obtain all the good material (by whatever method you arrive at that decision), however as soon as Wire crosses the line to being a 'collectible' you then need to have EVERYTHING, and you branch out into solo material ,and perhaps cover versions etc etc etc. The defining difference with the latter is that you want all the material whether it is any good or not, in fact listening to the music is almost secondary to the thrill of the hunt. Odd (?) that Charles is selling Meridians, since Touch issued Wire's First Last Hafler Trio 12" and Vien cdep and also issued the New Order Video 586 12" which was the music used at the Hacienda opening. Some music is just better to listen to when it comes off the vinyl replete with all the buzzes and pops and whatnots (especially the damn whatnots). How do you know which record is yours? Why listen to it of course! Hard to say that about a CD. And yes, I've got a few favorite albums that I can only listen to if I put a penny on the tonearm. I got the Easy CD Creator Platinum because it lets me record tapes and vinyl to the computer and to CD and I can clean up all the noise IF I want to. So I'm recording my tapes and vinyl to CD, but for the most part I'm not cleaning up anything...just a few major pops (and of course those have a life history of their own "got that scratch the night Brian stumbled out of the bathroom and knocked the whole turntable off the shelf...") ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 01:03:50 +0100 From: "ian jackson" Subject: [idealcopy] OT - the collector's dilemma Phillip wrote :- >are there any female list members? three to my knowledge. there's alice, katherine and kelly. come on girls, any of you do the alphabetical thing? are there any more out there lurking in a similar fashion? >Are there any list members who DON'T feel any need to be completists? me. never understood that 'keep it in the shrinkwrap' mentality. i've known several people who buy two copies of every Bowie release, but don't seem to be as passionate about music, in general, than me. i've got a lot of Wire, Joy Div/New Order and Fall but certainly not everything by any of them. if there's something i'd really like to have that's hard to get hold of, ie, the 'Mannequin' EP, i'd like to just let it come to me, leave it to fate, if you will. bootlegs are another thing that i stopped being bothered about a long time ago. having done a radio show in the past, i do have a lot of promo copies, etc., the only thing that i haven't opened and played is the 'paracetamol' CD package of Spiritualized's 'Ladies & Gentlemen...', for two reasons, one, because i'm not a massive fan anyway and yes, two, it might be worth a few bob in time! ian.s.j. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 10:51:43 +1000 From: "Phillip Blakeney" Subject: [idealcopy] Re: The collector's dilemma PaulRabjohn said: "I never met a male music fan who didn't store everything in alphabetical order. I've never met a woman who can be bothered to store anything (books, records, whatever) in alphabetical order. discuss" //// Actually I think you are right. One of the hallmarks of the 'collection' is that it is categorised and inventorised. Non-collectors just don't get it. My wife has an obsessive hate of what she terms clutter. I will install all my records and CDs alphabetically (actually not STRICTLY alphabetical, they are subdivided (each individually alphabetical) into collecting interests, all the Wire stuff, all the 70s punk stuff, all the Australian Prog rock, etc etc, and an all the rest category. Of course this raises problems of categorisation when something crosses into two groups !) and then I put them *on display*. Of course this display is clutter, so its a constant battle. //// I heard some idiot women on radio doing talkback on feng shui. She made the point that this curious set of principles, at least as practiced in the west, dictates that the household be clutter free, so I reckon feng shui is a (female) conspiracy to get us to put our music collection and other STUFF behind closed cupboard doors. Paul Pietromonaco said: (re: Instant Sheds two 7" sides) "Play them both simultaneously on your computer for the desired effect." //// Uh oh, now I need to get TWO opened copies and two turntables to do this properly! J Giluz said: "Don't get me wrong I value my Wire vinyls, or any other rare item in my collection, but I wouldn't buy them for thieir rareness, just for the plain fact that I don't have that recording in my collection" //// Aaah, but completism doesn't necessarily equate to rareness, it's just that the thrill of the chase eventually focuses on the hard to get items because that's all that left after you get the easy ones. To the true collector perhaps the worst thing is to actually complete the set: what do you do then??
