Joy Division obsessive will be desperate to get hold of "The Eternal -Variations on Joy Division" by the nau ensemble. The Eternal/Decades/Atmosphere given the Arvo Part treatment with string quartet and piano, plus a good shake of ambient sonics and shaman joik. The music is fine. The singing, though, is by a baroque period choir who appear to have caught their cobblers a nasty blow while being distracted by the consumption of a basketful of plums before the recording light went on - high voices and perfect diction. How Joy Division would have sounded if Shostakovich had lived long enough to share production duties with Eno and Charlotte Church had been chosen to replace Ian Curtis. I genuinely believe they've still got it in 'em. i wish i could be as optimistic, but i've always been a 'half-empty' person anyway!! i think everyone has their time and i think NO have had theirs...they should retire gracefully and get into art, or something, IMO. ...or maybe, boat-building, which would be most appropriate!! While hardly ground-breaking, there are elements of the 1st Monaco album that are prime Hooky. the only extra-curricular NO i've had any time for is the 1st Electronic lp. Hooky is a hero, but i much prefer '1st-gen' NO. oh sure, but NO haven't made anything classifiable as "shit". Just not as good as their best stuff. I think that it is a good DVD to have (DVD-9 means that it is dual layer on one side, and DVD-18 is dual layer and double sided). The Japanese price is high, and you still need a region-free player (in the US), but it is in NTSC as US TVs, instead of having to have to PAL-to-NTSC Region-free DVD player to play the one listed below from Europe, since it is PAL. cheers! - -fernando At 08:35 PM 5/28/01 -0400, MarkBursa@aol.com wrote: >Creaig, > >It says 'Region Code: 2/3/4/5/6' on the back, as well as 'Disc Format DVD-9', >whatever that means. > >Mark > ><< Speaking of which...to all of the owners of this New Order DVD, is it one >of those > region free encoded ones, or region 2 only? I have just received a copy of the 7" Bruce Gilbert 'Instant Shed' securely trapped inside a *sealed* silver packet. Now I am faced with the dilemma of all collectors- do I open it and listen to it, or keep it mint and sealed? Can any list members tell me what the music is like? It also makes me wonder how many list members have the collector bug. I always find it interesting when a mere 'interest' spills over into a 'collection'. For example with an 'interest' in Wire you would obtain all the good material (by whatever method you arrive at that decision), however as soon as Wire crosses the line to being a 'collectible' you then need to have EVERYTHING, and you branch out into solo material ,and perhaps cover versions etc etc etc. The defining difference with the latter is that you want all the material whether it is any good or not, in fact listening to the music is almost secondary to the thrill of the hunt. Suddenly like me you have over 60 Wire items, or for some list members no doubt, many more items. (Mind you I do listen to my stuff constantly!) I think collecting is a peculiarly male affliction as well: are there any female list members? Are there any list members who DON'T feel any need to be completists? Surf to http://www.weasel-bot.com/gilbert These aren't the highest quality files, but they'll give you some idea of what's in the package. Play them both simultaneously on your computer for the desired effect. (Personally, I bought two copies of the single - opened one, and left the other sealed.) Are there any > list members who DON'T feel any need to be completists? Cheers,Phillip I always valued content over form, so any collectible inclination I had was relatively easy to satisfy. Don't get me wrong - I value my Wire vinyls, or any other rare item on my collection, but I wouldn't buy them for their rareness, just for the plain fact that I don't have that recording on my collection. There are too many good stuff to collect so I can't bother myself with trivial things like edition, cover, format, etc. giluz ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #163 *******************************
