Bush Empire last night was excellent. Although I hate the idea of "reserved seating". I don't have the new CD but it sounds pretty good. Anyone? Anyone remotely interested? <<<<<< Oh yeah! I've been a fan of Red House Painters since about Ocean Beach (over which the local press gushed so much I had to check it out). I live in SF and saw them several times over the next couple years (one of the best being in the opening slot for John Cale at the Fillmore). I've got Old Ramon and like it alot. It's not too surprising, given the John Denver tribute and Kozelek's role in Almost Famous that it's got a vague undercurrent of west coast 70s. (In my book, this is not a crime.) My first RHP live experience was a Kozelek solo show at which he talked about being invited to a festival in Brazil and being sorely tempted to play a 40 minute version of Mother. The drummer was in the house, went home, got his drum set and the two played a 25 minute version that had us believing he could have pulled it off, and left the Brazilian audience wanting more. They played here a couple months ago, but I'd made an unbreakable plan, but will be seeing them when they return on July 1 Do you have a set list? ~Joseph - - - - - - - - - It's no fun being an intellectual by yourself... I don't have a full set list. Just a handful of songs I remember. They started with Grace Cathedral Park and played Rock 'N Roll Singer, Mistress, Find Me, Rubeuns (spelling?), er, quite a few funny quips, a lot of people shouting for Michael, New Jersey. I don't have either of the Kozelek solo albums, yet or Old Ramon yet so I don't know which ones they played from them. Enjoy the gig!!! Chris. Last night Television played at the Metro in Chicago, about a year after Wire played there. I pretty much agreed w/ The Wire's recent review of the London show: an excellent night in which "Little Johnny Jewel" was the highlight, the material from their early 90s album was being re-examined, and the 4 tracks from Marquee Moon (Venus, See No Evil, M.M., and Prove It) were pretty much just run through ... when they started M. M., Verlaine's smile border-lined on being a smirk. (All requests were met with "yeah, right.") The only song from Adventure was the encore, Glory, which was followed by a blues jam. Unfortunately, some members of the audience talked through the 90s material, which contained many of the most inspired momements--they usually began with a short improve in which at some point Verlaine would break into the next song. Most 90s songs were expanded w/ longer instrumental sections. While I wouldn't call them "tight", they were very creative. For me, the only negative was that Richard's equipment went down during M. M., meaning he couldn't play the beautiful "bird like" ending. While he struggled w/ his electronics, Tom led the trio through a second run through of the part leading up to the final--still not ready. They just started jamming. Finally, Richard gave Tom a negative shake of his head and just joined in on the jam. Actually, it was pretty cool. One last thought: no one seems to know if these 2 concerts are absolutely all, or if they plan to do more. If they're considering creating new material, it would make sense that they explore through the more recent material (they did a large percentage of it). Also, they really seemed to be having a good time. Anyway, I do know they won't be playing much more right away ... Richard is touring this summer to promote his new album. Originally released on the Dutch Barooni label. I actually have the Barooni issue too, but the Atavistic label released it in the US and the MP3 on epitonic is part of their Atavistic section. It's a really nicely packaged CD. This album is mostly Lee spoken / poetry type readings over music which is in the dronier darker and more sinister vein of prime SY circa Bad Moon Rising & EVOL. It features Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley on some tracks and is the best thing I've heard from the SY camp since Daydream Nation. >>>>Good to mention Madrid. I only have the twelf inch. Was wandering who they are, where they are from etc. Is something written on this ceedee Graeme? The CD is entitled Madrid and is on the French ici, d'ailleurs label, tel/fax 03 83 36 79 98 http://www.ici-dailleurs.com Judging by the bands names, I think they might well be French. Actually I was mistaken - no acoustic guitars are credited. In fact they played violin, trumpet, clarinet, bass clarinet, cello and bassoon. The label site is in French and the Madrid CD can be ordered from there. It's actually their second album, and the remixes were made from the first one Night Clubber. The label is also home to Bastard. In the US, it can be ordered from http://www.riouxs.com/new/genre/indie2.html Who describe it on their website thus: MADRID - s/t CD (Ici D'Ailleurs) FR $15.50 Summer is finally here and Madrid's debut full-length has got to be the perfect soundtrack. Cool, languid guitars snake their way across hypnotic drum patterns; samples weave seamlessly in and out of luscious, essentially organic arrangements; strings, woodwind and trumpet dovetail effortlessly. All that's missing is a deck chair and a tall gin and tonic! Madrid's last release was the critically acclaimed EP on the UK's Paperplane label featuring remixes by Bruce Gilbert amongst others. IDA011 They also have the 12". *What does Bruce's remix sound like?* Jan >>>>My last bought ceedee: Biosphere's - Substrata 2. And I like it very much at this moment right here. Ambient beyond. Chris asked >>>>Could you let us know a bit more about this CD as it sounds interesting? Biosphere is on the UK label Touch, who sell all their CD's for a tenner by mail order. Try looking at the Touch website, where you should also find some audio extracts... http://www.touch.demon.co.uk Biosphere is actually one of my least favourite artists on this usually interesting label, although I haven't heard Substrata 2. Philip Jeck and Fennesz are very good indeed! For me these two make unique sounds whereas Biosphere doesn't really stand out (although that could be the point?) I have the new double Biosphere Substrata / Man with a Movie Camera which, to be fair, is a reissue, but his sound palette just didn't feature tones that I found attractive. However, maybe when I'm in the right frame of mind I'll slip it on again and be taken by surprise... Of course, Gilbert & Lewis have recorded / remixed for Touch and they also put out the excellent Hafler Trio Wir remix The First Last Number 12" and the devestatingly jolly Wir Vien CDEP. One of those odd listening experiences just happened. I forgot what I was listening to and for a few seconds thought it was A Touching Display. The track was actually Forgotten Sea by Fiend from the Caledonian Mystic CD (God Bless). Fiend is ex Telstar Ponies drummer Brendan O'Hare. Are you in guns? Unfortunately, I don't speak Italian. Which is quite funny, considering my last name.
