[Ian Grant Subject: [idealcopy] A Witness and a potted history of British Indie... I saw this lot support the Fall once. I don't know if they did all the tour but they supported them at Leicester Uni on the This Nation's Saving Grace tour. They were on Ron Johnson records in the UK. Same label as Stump, Noseflutes, The Ex, the Shrubs, and Leamington Spa's very own Jackdaw With Crowbar. Jackdaw were big on the US radio playlists on account of a track called Crow which was v Beefheartesque and got played to death by Peel. Unfortunately a track on their follow up ep was entitled Fuck the USA. No US radio play for that one. Despite their constant attention in fanzines like James Brown's 'Attack on Bzag' and John Robb's 'Rox' (both now media stars in the UK) I'd imagine that A Witness struggled. Ron Johnson was a label that like a lot of labels at the end of the 80s thought that it could still sell as many records as indie labels of the mid 80s. Unfortunately the distribution companies thought that this situation could be sustained too and gave these labels lots of money to pay for these bands' recording costs. When they didn't recoup the labels and often the dist companies went to the wall e.g. Red Rhino and ultimately Rough Trade. Or did a Creation (sell to a major), or distributed Kylie records (Pinnacle), or put out major record co 'indie' labels e.g. Rough Trade Dist ressurected as RTM and Hut, Dedicated, or covered themselves e.g. Rough Trade label and Blanco y Negro. Good to see that A Witness have managed to get their own recordings back. Anyone ever notice the similarity between Wire's "Panamanian Craze" (from Turns & Strokes) and The Cosmic Jokers "Galactic Joke (Teil B)? Never really thought there much -overt- Krautrock influence in Wire but this is quite revealing. Hi, >Do people in this list think that the Pixies were really *the* guitar band, >in some quick pop sense (so as not compare to the more off-center bands >like The Chameleons, House of Love, or even My Bloody Valentine). Well, I always admired the Pixies far more than I loved them. For me, the very magnificent Dinosaur Jr soared far higher and touched more raw nerves at that time. And they were pop in much the same way as the Pixies were pop, really. Cheers, ig. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #124 *******************************
