Released two cracking singles (In a Rut and Babylon's Burning) and a decent debut album (The Crack). Propensity for cod-Reggae didn't help. Tragic bit - singer Malcolm Owen was a smack-head and OD'd in mid-1980 (shortly after Ian Curtis). Band attempted to continue as three-piece under name Ruts DC, but the spark had gone. Drummer ended up in Aztec Camera. There is a cheap CD containing all the good stuff. One cool item is that Joseph from the IC list and I were able to meet before the show, so at least I have a face connected with one list member! He showed up with his lady, Z, and we shared a few pints at a local blues club before heading over to the Fillmore. As with the Washington show, the Young Fresh Fellows opened up, with Robyn coming out and introducing them to the audience, and they were a hoot! Of all things, they reminded me of Slade, with a bit of Spinal Tap thrown in for humor and chaos. They obviously had a ball playing live, and their rocking humor was quite infectious!! The Soft Boys set was a bit different than the Washington gig, and I recall them opening with "Kingdom of Love" and never looked back! The audience responded well and the whole band really played good. The sound was great, with the exception of Mr Rew's guitar, which was almost inaudible for several songs, but settled out in time for his dueling leads with Robyn. For the first of several encores they were joined by Thomas Dolby on keyboards for "You'll have to go Sideways" (featuring Kimberly Rew's awesome e-bow work)and an absolutely stunning cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine"! Another suprise nugget was a thumping version of the Egyptian's "Sleeping With Your Devil Mask". Other hightlights for me were "Only the Stones Remain" which absolutely kicked ass!Robyn's guitar fondling dance during "Old Pervert" was particularly fun as well! The musicianship was astounding! I remember commenting that Robyn or Kimberly could easily play lead in 90% of the rock bands around and to see them both was great! And for the finale, the YFF (minus the drummer, who they couldn't find) joined them for the rousing closing number "Give it to the Soft Boys". And so we did!!! So it looks like the tour is heading toward the UK and I give them a definite thumbs up!!! If any listees are looking for fun, well played music, this show would fit the bill quite nicely! Usually mastered direct from vinyl! West One was the final single, released after Owen threw a seven. Not as good as the first two singles IMO, but not bad... The terrific new Silo record springs to mind. And of course now I've said that today I've just got one of the best record ever made! Its the Avalanches new album, 'Since I Left You'.....a sound collage of consisting entirely of samples....from 1,000 obscure and cheesy records from the 50s to the 90s, beautiful, funny and complete and utter gobsmacking pop genius. and you can dance to it! > good stuff might be ever harder to track down and you > might have to dig deeper to find it but there's plenty > of good sounds to be heard. Alas lack of time & money means I can't really do this. (No music allowed at work either!) :( >No one lives long enough Perhaps, but I know I'll still be listening off the beaten track when I'm way past John Peel's age and I'm sure you will too Graeme >As for sounding like Mark Prindle, well I wouldn't>know about that! After Paul reported that this shmuck>compared '154' to Phil Collins lets just say I didn't>exactly rush to view his website. You've got to laugh>though. That's the funniest thing he says though. The rest of it is puerile, lowest common denominator toilet humour...makes Viz read like The Wire Just keep whatever drugs the guy is on well > away from me! I think you'll find the guy is high on piss weak American 'lager' (Wasssupppppp....burp) and a misconception that he is funny, and that anyone other than his wanky mates are interested to read his ill-informed, illiterate reviews of Mid 80s US 'College Rock >Much as I like Aphex Twin, 'Music For Fruit' fairly >craps on anything he's ever done IMO. And as for 'Ab >Ovo' well don't start me off. I fear I will start you off! I like Dome and some of Bruce's stuff but really Aphex is a different kettle of (singing) fish and can't compare to BCG. Richard James has written some heart-breakingly beautiful music, (see huge chunks of Ambient Works Vol 1+2 and his warp albums) plus some truly wonderful twisted-pop records. Bruce's solo stuff is Interesting, clever and sometimes fun, but not the sort of thing I'd want to listen to over and over again. Maybe I'm just too thick to understand it..... ask me in 10 years time, but over all the Wire solo stuff I've heard my favorite is still the last Immersion Album which is gorgeous. Now that really is the equal of some of the best Autechre/Aphex Twin stuff. I guess I'm a NewmanOid and Graeme is a Gilbertoid! it might be comical to note that V/Vm are putting out a couple of 3" CD's chock full of > unofficial Aphex remixes / hack-butchery in a bid to > help the Twin. Catalogue numbers are HAT01 & HAT02 I don't really 'get' V/vm either. OK I'm just an Ambient fluff merchant at the end of the day, and I like experimentation as much as the next Idealcopyist, but I also like melody, coherent rythmn and a bit of warmth in my music.(Autechre manage this without being at all 'mainstream' don't they?) Sorry mate but V/vm to my (perhaps ill-informed) ears sounds like a troubled boy in a bedroom feeding 'Now That's What I Call Music -Volume 4' through a ring modulator......is it art? Am I missing something?! Oh well that's me scuppered my chances of getting anywhere on the Manchester Underground Electronic scene! I've got a 56k modem so How about 'So and Slow It Downloads?' Napster, seems easier to find stranger things now that its not so cluttered with people downloading Eminem and Metallica! I found Shivering Man and (one for the comp) Elastica's version of 12XU I also found the 7" mix of Knife Slits Water (ACR) which is fantastic much better than the 12" or the LP version. Also the 7" mixes of New Orders Ceremony and Temptation are radically different to their 12" counterparts. (The 12"s in both cases appear to be re- recordings rather than remixes) The got me thinking, are all the early Wire singles taken from LPs the same as the LP versions? i.e. any reason for getting the singles other than the nice sleeves? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 21:37:56 EDT From: WAndyComer@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] Ovation Breadwinner i am in dire need of cash, and am considering parting with one of my prize possessions: an all-original, white ovation breadwinner (with original active electronics...yes, just like the one colin has)...i am wondering if anyone on-list might have interest. please email me directly if so... thanks, andy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 21:41:28 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] everybody dance now Tim, << I also found the 7" mix of Knife Slits Water (ACR) which is fantastic much better than the 12" or the LP version. << Totally different recording... I like 'em all.... >> Also the 7" mixes of New Orders Ceremony and Temptation are radically different to their 12" counterparts. (The 12"s in both cases appear to be re- recordings rather than remixes)<< Whoa! There are two versions of Ceremony. the original Hannett-produced (slightly slower, and IMO better) version form the 7inch which is also the version on the 12inch with the dark green cover. This was recorded in New York before Gillian Gilbert joined the band. Then there's the re-recorded version (with Gillian) which is on the white 12inch and is the version that appears on most compilations. Check for Hooky's major bum note towards the end. I don't think the 7inch version is available on CD at all, sadly... As for Temptation - the 7inch and 12 inch versions are totally different. In fact, the 12 inch starts where the 7inch finishes! If you adjust the levels on the fadeout of the 7inch and the fadein of the 12inch you can join them together. They were recorded at the same time, but are not a continuous performance. Then there's the remix of Temptation which was done for Substance in 1987. This is the version that was used in the Trainspotting soundtrack. Of course, it's based on the 12inch - so it actually misses off the main part of the song! Ceremony and Temptation - two of the loveliest records ever made IMO. >> The got me thinking, are all the early Wire singles taken from LPs the same as the LP versions? i.e. any reason for getting the singles other than the nice sleeves? >> Outdoor Miner is of course extended on single as the CM version was considered too short. The piano solo was added. Bear in mind (apart from OM) only Mannequin, I am the Fly and Map Ref are on albums - all these are the same. As are the album B-sides like Practice Makes Perfect. Of course on Mannequin's B-side you get Colin going "Awright......here it is....again...." before 12XU. Sounding pissed off with it even then (Nov '77). Who'd have guessed it'd be out again as the new Wire single 23 years later.... ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V4 #108 *******************************
